I have a 1971 lemans and would like to change gear ratio. to 3.23.I have a 2.78 ratio now. I was told I can't go over a 3.08,if my axle was a 8.2 because of my carrier size. 8.5 axle would be no problem with 3.23. can't find a number nowhere on the axle or brake backing plate. does anyone know what axle came out in a 1971 lemans 350 auto?

'71 Lemans would have come from the factory with a 8.2 rear end assuming it hasn't been changed out. Rick

The '71 8.2" axle should have large (3/4" or so) ring gear bolts that are LH thread. The 2.xx carrier will support gear ratios up thru 3.23. 3.36 or larger number gears require the 3 series carrier. Another way to ID a 8.2" rear end is by how the rear U-joint is retained. Threaded straps with nuts indicate an 8.2, the 8.5" had bolts that went thru the straps and threaded into the pinion yoke.
