Default 68 Gto- Carb part. - What is it?

What is this cylinder part with rubber cover and wire lead? What is it's function?

It's an idle solenoid. Usually used on AC equipped cars. When the AC is turned on the solenoid is energized bumping up the RPM a bit at idle to compensate for the loss of engine speed when the AC is turned on.

anti-diesel solenoid. there to keep car from running on when engine is shutdown, part of emission controls.

There hard to find and are not reproduced.

As said, once you shut the ignition off the solenoid discharges keeping the engine from dieseling.

Hi,
If the exterior is okay and the rubber boots are intact, you can rewind the electro-magnet coil inside. Mine had a broken wire in it when I got it. I merely uncoilled one turn and soldered the wire to the electircal connect. It has worked ever since.
The bolt end is used to adjust the engine's idle speed. When energized it will hold the engine at 750 to 800 rpm depending on where you set your idle. When de-energized the screw on the driver side of the carb will keep the engine at 650 rpm depending on how you set it. 650 rpm is the engine speed for setting the initial timing.
JLHarper is right. they are hard to find and are expensive when you do. Seems to me that I saw them in the PY catalog in limited supply.
