Read the Julian date as 149th day, in other words, May 29th, 1969. From the pic, can't read the assembly date on the axle tube, any idea? This housing does have external axle seals & tapered axle bearings?

Any ideas where to find the axle assembly date code? I have not been able to find one. You're correct about the casting date for the center section. The picture of the axle tube shows the broadcast code of 'XH', a 3.55 posit traction code. The wheel bearings are of the sealed variety and the axle seals are in Board of the bearings, not external. To me, this axle assembly looks like it straddled the 1969–1970 Model Years. I hope this helps....

With the center casting number of 9799202 it should be for a 70 model year GTO. Based on the casting date of 149 th day, you should find a 3 digit date stamp just above or to the left of the "XH" stamped on the axle tube

Agree with Steve, the "202" casting is normally a '70-72 nodular A-body deal. With sealed axle bearings, that doesn't seem like a '70 deal from my records. My bet is this rear was a very late June-1st week of Aug 69 factory installation. Have yet yet to document a very early '70 A-body with sealed axle bearings but have documented a very late '69 Arlington plant A-body (08A) with original sealed bearing axles... have yet to run across a current year model A-body that was built so late

Would be great to know of what documented original rears are in several late June & July built Pontiac plant GTO's that have born with 3.55 STT or 3.90 or 4.33 HD STT. Can make a phone call & find out on a mid June Arlington built RAIV car, but with the logistics, would bet it is an even earlier assembled rear than this 149 cast rear.

The axle assembly date is "G17" taken from the diff case cover. This would make the axle assembly date July 17, 1969. To me it seems like this unit straddles the 69 - 70 model years. The introduction of the 9799202 carrier looks like a late 69 model year running change. This change is always preferred in production to minimize scrap and obsolesces costs by the OE... I hope this helps!
