I was in town yesterday killing some time between appointments so I went over to my local old time salvage yard/ tow company/ mechanic shop to look for some Rally wheels and see what they had in the way of Q-jets.
I told the younger owner that sometime I needed to get with him to get some pics under the hood of his '71 Grand Prix so I could start putting the a/c and accessories together on my '71 that I bought some years ago all torn apart. He said he had the car there at the yard so we could look at it now if I wanted. As we walked out to look at it I asked him for about the fiftieth time if he was ever going to part with his car. I was expecting him to smile and say nah like he always does. Instead he replied that he guessed he would sell it after all. I about fell over!
Anyway, after all was said and done I've got new to me '71 455 GP with a mismatched door and a set of groovy slot mag wheels coming home with me.
I'm pretty pumped about it. Of course it doesn't take much to excite this old Pontiac nut!

Yeah,I need to go down with the trailer and drag it home. I could probably dribble some gas in the carb and drive it onto the trailer. Been sitting for quite a few years but I think I'll just winch it on and go over it here at home before firing it up. It's a running and driving car, supposedly. He says it got a posi rear end too.
It's sure enough ugly but complete right down to the dual snorkel air cleaner. Only thing missing is the keys and the radiator. Perils of being owned by a junkyard man.
I got so excited yesterday I even forgot to snap a pic of the trim tag or of the car's exterior. Looks like original silver paint with a deep brown vinyl bucket seat interior.

Couldn't help myself. Spent the day working on the GP. It's a model J not an SJ. Original 455 though. No posi, that was not correct. Put a battery in, no crank. Climbed underneath, the trans linkage to the neutral safety switch was unbolted as was the shifter cable. Not sure why. Reattached, spun right over. Dribbled gas down the vent on the carb, barked right off, Noisy as hell. Has a nice dual exhaust running glass packs but I had to cut one side off due to a crushed pipe. No radiator so haven't run it long but I'm encouraged enough to start searching for a replacement radiator. Any suggestions for a good quality replacement?
