Vacuum pump crankcase
Have anyone tried using a alternator with integrated vacuum pump to make vacuum in the crankcase?
Cheap and easy, instead of going with full setup with pump, belt etc.? |

I've never HEARD of an alternator with integrated vacuum pump. I've seen generators with integrated PS pumps, though. 'Course, that's very 1950s.

While it would provide enough vacuum to operate the brake booster id be concerned it wont move enough volume to provide much crankcase vacuum.

Seems like a great idea , have to get 1 & try it.

Just make note that some rear main seals rely on having some crankcase pressure to hold the lip of the seal on the crank.
Actually since you are posting in the street section why do you feel the need to take the crankcase down into the negative range all the time when if your running headers a vacupan set up works quite well above 4500 rpm and does not detract from the looks of the motor like what your taking about!

Boy that sure is an ugly alternator lol
But, interesting idea. I'd be curious to know how much vacuum it's actually capable of drawing. Given the size of the nipple I'm guessing not a ton. A typical belt driven engine vacuum pump would use something much larger, like a -12 line. So I would question it's ability to be used as such. I could see that apparatus on the back of the alternator causing fitment issues on some vehicles as many generally don't have that much room behind the alternator. Something to consider. Would be nice if they made a cleaner version of it in the aftermarket. Maybe they do. Someone has had to think of this idea by now. Many cars in the 50's had vacuum pumps that worked off the mechanical fuel pump (part of the pump assembly). Usually to run things like vacuum operated windshield wipers. 55-57 T-birds come to mind as one example. |

Is the vacuum pump on the alternator compatible with oil mist/vapors?
Yes, I'm sure the volume of the pump is too small to suck-out a crankcase; double-so if there's excess blowby. |
