Power Steering Pump End Play
Anyone know what typical end play is on a power steering pump .. circa 1968?
Rebuilt mine, seems in good condition, no surprises. Pulley shaft has probably .030-.040" end play. Seems like a lot to me, but there was nothing I saw that would indicate they are shimmed or anything to adjust end play. Everything kind of fits together just one way .... only real variable was the depth the shaft bushing is pressed in and that didn't seem to have any bearing on end play. This is with the pump dry. I guess it's possible in operation pump pressure takes up the play. |

I have resealed dozens of power steering pumps and have found different amounts of end play. Some more than others even on the excessive side that performed just fine. I feel even up to. 040" is normal.

Thank you, that was also the opinion I got from others.
