I just installed my shiny new Rollmaster timing chain and its loose. At first I thought it was because of the line bore. But,the machine shop didnt take any material out of the block, just the caps. I then tried a new Comp chain I have for another motor and its nice and tight. What gives? Also the upper sprocket moves side to side on the cam. Its a new cam with a new key.

GM- If I took a link out it would be to tight. Its not like its going to fall off but it just seemed to have some excess slack compared to my other one..

I would use the tightest chain you can fit. If the Comp chain is a "true" double roller, then it should be fine, they're a reputable company. The tighter the chain, the more accurate your timing will be!

You may want to call IA, as they have the different links that will work. Although I don't see why JW's suggestion wouldn't work, if its the same type chain.

I have to ask, why would your shop only take material out of the caps??? Caps must be sink with main saddles, all done at once?? maybe im missing something here???Sounds to me like your mains will be out of round?? How much was removed???

Hey guys. Check out the pic under New products on my website! I have Ultra-Lite Billet Chain sets made for me by Rollmaster! They have all keyways laser etched. And std fit is .003 tighter than a stock chain! Something I requetsted!! Everyone else makes std, .005,.010. So I figured .003 would make a nice tight chain

To line bore they used a boring bore similar to one used to bore the cylinders. They torqued the caps down and set the bar to cut the caps only. Line honing is similar to resizing a connecting rod. Trust me there not out of round.

You don't want a real tight chain. Snug to slightly loose is better. Too tight and it puts additional load on the front cam bearing. Be careful.
A roller usually loosens to a point, then it's stretched out and stays at that point. Build it fast, build it right, build a Pontiac. http://PontiacDude.cc |

Unless your machinist is a magician they had to remove at least a couple of thousandths when they line bored your mains. The only advantage to line boring is it removes less material than honing, but it WILL remove some.

llucas- I don't know if he's magic but he does have a black cape, top hat and a lovely assistant. But your right maybe a thou.
Dude- good to know that. Its not terribly loose. About 1-1/2 degrees at the crank. Its in the motor anyway so we'll see what happens. [This message was edited by Jack Ferris on April 18, 2003 at 10:32 PM.]
