Help me Gents,
Well, I ran out of money and summer to get the blueprinted 407 into the 1970 GTO, so looks like I'll devote the winter to optional details (next will be deburring the lifter valley-whats the best tool?). I gasket-matched the Performer RPM to my KRE heads CNC'ed by SD Performance. I'm new to die-grinding so I was very careful but the intake DID need several hours to match right. (Didn't touch the heads--they look awesome!) If you look carefully, you might notice I took off the "Edelbrock" and other logos with a coping saw, then blended it in to go for that Stealth look. The intake will be painted pontiac blue with the rest of the motor, and the large stock dual snorkel air cleaner should hide what comes next (heh, heh). . . I made this custom spacer out of a Spectre p/n 5775 that cost about $15 shipped. It comes as a rough "ported" four hole adapter to put quadrajets on to square bore manifolds and vice versa (square bore carbs onto spreadbore manifolds). Why would I do this? I don't have the money to pay the $600-$800 for a custom quadrajet (my first choice) and I honestly don't have the skill and patience to read Cliff's book and pull it off myself. I got this mighty Demon 850 annular slightly used for a nice price, and although it will just bolt on to the spreadbore RPM intake, I thought I'd take advantage of the tech in Jim Hand's book, which says that opening the plenum between the secondaries but closing it between the primaries results in the best overall street power. He recommends pine boards, but I figured aluminum would help me hone my die grinding skills before I take the "Kaufmann" logos off my $1200 EACH heads. Jim uses a quadrajet carb, so his is more of a spacer than an adapter. Mine is trying to blend the squarebore Demon as gently as possible into the spreadbore plenum. As of today the spacer is just roughed out, and will be finished with sanding rolls eventually (unless someone knows of a better tool?) WILL THIS MAKE POWER OR LOSE POWER? I'm very open to opinions and suggestions for improvements. I won't have access to a dyno (the right way, obviously) and I'm not sure I'll feel anything with the seat of my pants (this is targeted as a 480-520 hp engine). Rest of the combo: KRE 290 cfm d-ports ra4 cam w/ rhoads 2.5 inch out ra exhaust manifolds (yeah, I know, but again STEALTH) 10.5 SCR Wiseco flat tops w/ Scat h-beams milodon oil pan, tray, etc. TH400 w redneck 2800 stall custom converter (maybe eventually a 4L80e!) 3.90 rear 28" tires Thanks for your input! |
