My 67 Firebird often will not start unless a charger is applied, dont want to guess whether it is battery or alternator. Only has 13 volts when running, 12.5 when not. How much voltage should it have when car running? 13 seems low, both battery and alternator are fairly new.

it depends. how charged up is the battery and whats the load on the charging system? with the engine running mine will charge between 14.2v to 14.6v.

if the battery is reading 12.5 when off, but it won't start your car unless jumped, that doesn't sound right. Are all your connections good?

You need to load test the battery to either confirm or rule that out as the problem. That being said car should be putting out 14 or more volts when running.
