Default Quick rear question-

I bought a rear out of a 1970 Gto off of a guy on here. Told me it was all rebuilt but it was shot but that's another story. It is a nodular housing and it has the old cone style posi which is shot. I need to replace the posi but I do not know what I need. I want a posi and I want like 3:36 gears(I think). I currently have 3:90's and absolutely hate them. The guy said the rear was a 3:55 which would be stock but it didn't. What do I have a bop 8.2 28 spline? I don't what to open her up til I have the parts

Get a hold of Jim Mitschke (Monzaz) on the board here. He did one for me and I bought it in Texas and shipped it to him and had him do the work. Great job and very reasonable. You could probably ship it both ways for 75-100 bucks or talk to him and have him ship you the parts. There is a certain amount of machine work that has to be done and you will have to factor that in . Good luck. Ed

Ok I'll try to look him up- this is the first time I'm hearing machine work has to be done - any more details?

Jim is great to deal with, I bought my 8.5 from him- although in my case, I just had him use his inventory to rather than shipping a rear to him. 75-100 both ways sounds really inexpensive- let us know if you go that route and what the shipping costs end up being.

Jim shipped my gearset to Alexandria Bay NY to a shipper I use there. Weighed roughly 48#'s and cost 31.22. So both ways from PA might be even less. As far as machine work if that posi was as bad as you say it was you can bet it will need Jim's caressing. IMHO. Ed

Yeah it's the old cone style - don't want to bother repairing it - was just gunna replace it with a eaton or auburn- given my sig what ratio would be best? I have a 3:90 like I said it's not even fun to drive. Before I did the engine work I had a 400 stock engine it had a 3.23 in it and was slow. I live 15 miles from anything either direction and would like a more comfortable cruise not 60 mph at 3000+ RPMs. But I also want it to get up and go when needed. What combos are you guys running(carrier and ratio)? I was thinking like 3.36's would be good. I do go to the track w friends but I'm not hard core about lowering my et's I just go to have a good time

Check these calculators out: http://www.wallaceracing.com/gear-speed.php
http://www.wallaceracing.com/gearcalc.php

I drive my car every day and on I-10 at 80mph so a gear lower than 3.08:1 would suck for me without an Overdrive transmission.

You should let us know who the guy was that sold you the part so nobody else buys anything from him and gets took in the future. That type of information will protect others.

i think you would be happy with the 3.36, tho you mentioned you had 3.23 gears and were not impressed? after 3.36, i believe you have to go to 3.55s. go with an eaton clutch posi unit, they are good and rebuildable.

You are running a "Performer" Intake on a 462????? You will not be happy with the way the car runs until you allow it to breathe!

i would sell the weak pontiac rear and just put a readily available 12 bolt chevy rear in it. no mods neccesary. unless you got a trailer queen way more stronger and parts availability is much better. just sell your old one and do it. what town are you in?
i live in carbon county outside of lehighton. Jim
