Default Oil Pan options for 1st Gen Firebirds

I am considering a Canton oil pan for my 461 going into my 69 bird. The description for Canton pan 15-452 indicates that mods may be required in first generation birds. Does anyone know what the mods required are? http://butlerperformance.com/i-24452...an-15-452.html

Spotts sells a similar pan (OP451) but I'm not sure if it needs mods and their phone # is disconnected. http://www.spottsperformance.com/oilpans.htm

Anyone have experience with these and could provide advice?

Will a Miloden be a better option?

Hi Will,
I run this pan on my 1968 Firebird with a 455 and I won't go back. It fit well. It controls oil very well on a local road course. The pan is lower than the frame by less than an inch. So it's exposed. I covered it with a skid plate. The dipstick goes directly into the pan. It does not go into the engine block. I had to put a mark on the dipstick where FULL actually is. And third, I had to shim my aftermarket urethane motor mounts 1/4" so the pan cleared the frame. Some people have had issues with these motor mounts being thinner than stock.

Thanks. Is the factory dipstick tube location not an option with the pan? Also, how did you shim your motor mounts? My factory pan touches with the Advance Auto replacement mounts after 2k miles I service for the mounts.

You can run the factory stick. Just make sure the the lower tube inside the pan is secure. Depending on your engine some had a lower tube that bolted to tapped holes in the main cap, others used the windage tray to hold it in place.
If you're running it now, no reason you can't with the Canton.

I notched my center cross member to clear, but shims will work. Just get some flat stock, cut to the same size as the mount face and drill a 9/16 hole in the middle.
Make sure it doesn't stick out over the frame mount tang though.

I used a large hardened washer that was 1/4" thick to shim MM

Great. I believe my windage tray is the one that holds the dipstick tube in place. I assume it will fit this fine?

Any other known obstacles with this pan, like does it come close to any of the steering mechanics? Does it have the 3 holes to hold the oil pan seal over the main cap?

Has anyone had any sealing issues with the bop one piece seal and a Canton pan? I'm concerned with the area over the rear main cap as mine is the version without the "groove"

Not your question but I used the BOP two-piece seal with the Canton pan and they sealed fine.

I think he's talking about the pan gasket.

Hey thanks for clarifying that AZ.
The BOP pan gasket works great with the Canton pan.

I have the Moroso 8qt pan on my '67 bird. It's the lowest hanging part under my car (by about 2") and it sits lower over the cross member than a stock pan.
(I built custom engine mounts using a stock pan & had 5/16 to 3/8 clearance, but had to add a 1/4" plate under the mounts for the Moroso pan to clear the cross member.)

The right, inner, tie rod end hits the pan on full lock, but the gearbox is from an '88 IROC so that may be part of the problem.

The first time I did a few launches with the coil overs bottomed out, I ended up scraping a hole in the pan. With the coil overs set mid way, I just take it easy over speed bumps.

Thanks for all the replies - seems most aftermarket parts require a mod to work...

I have a Canton Road Race pan and Doug's 2" tube headers in a 1969 Firebird.

The BOP 1 piece gasket is great. My issue is with the in the pan dipstick -- can not get it on due to header tube being right there. If only their NPT fitting was up an inch or angled straight up. UGGHH!!

The headers just kissed the passenger side of the kickout part of the pan but Canton's notes at least warn you about that. The dipstick issue is not cool.

From advice from Skip Fix I used the stock dipstick. He told me to just push the dip stick in a few times and leave a witness mark on the pan and then drill a hole there for it to go thru.Worked great.Maybe he will chime in.Tom
