Default 1970-???? CORRECT spare tire hold down

Here is a picture of a spare tire hold down hook. I have been asked to repo this because the one that is advertised on Ebay is not correct. Can you guys take a look at this and give me your opinion if this is correct ( the one in my car is a rigged up one)
This sample is made from 2 pieces and is welded together. Would GM do it that way? If GM did not do it someone took some time to fab this up, it looks like it was plated after the two parts were welded together. Does anyone else have an original that they could compare to this one or a good memory. Also What years might this be correct for? ALL input is appreciated. Thanks Craig

That looks like mine from memory. My threads are hosed up so I could use a replacement too. I don't recall any welding on it though, just a bend.

Just to the right of the bend is a weld where the 2 pieces were welded together. I could make it from one piece or like the sample. I am going to try this one on my car tomorrow..

i can go out tommorow and look at my spare contraption I made up recently
I don't think the hook is wrong,it was in the trunk with a [B]FULL[BB]spare.
So I assume it's correct.............oh wait I did that before

Here is a link to a thread about these holddown hooks. These are definitely one piece. Dens71TA repopped one by buying straight steel rod, bending it into shape, threading the end, heat treating the bends, and plating it with Eastwoods zinc kit. He used my original as a guide and his result was right on (see thread). Ddmrk bought the one he did. Note that these hold downs are for the full spare only. The space saver spare holddown is shorter and bent at a different angle.

Gee I posted on that thread and don't remember it at all. God its hell to be getting old.

The pictures in that thread don't quite match the one that I posted and also the one 2many posted, Could this be one for a SpaceSaver?
2many, what do you think?

I'm pretty sure that MY sample is from a FULLSIZE spare.

The car it came from eas a 70 Esprit with JS 14 x 7" Rally II's.

Since the thread is here anyway I'll ask something related. Is the T/A full sized spare a fifth wheel of whatever was used? The reason I asked is when I got my T/A the original Rallys were replaced by Buick rims except for one full sized Rally in the trunk. I'm not sure if that was always the spare or just something the goof decided would be an upgrade to what he had. It is the correct date coded rim and nice Firestone tire too, so if it's right I'm extra cool!

From what I have seen & understand you DID get a 5th wheel /tire to match the other 4 (as a spare),unless you ordered the "spacesaver" (inflatable spare).
This goes for steelies on base birds,Esprits & Formulas,as well as Honeycombs & Rally II's.

You're lucky he didn't put a Buick motor in there as well!

He's the lucky one. He saved himself a drive by strangling. Thanks for the info!

Repop full size spare hold down installed on my '71 T/A. Mine and ddmrk's are the only ones in existence. I never got any inquiries to make more. Ddmrk has unit #1. Maybe it will be worth something someday if I become famous!
