Default Fast ratio steering

Long story short, 66 Gto had for 20 years now, was looking into a 12:7 JGC deal, ran into a guy who said he helped the owner put in a Monte carlo SS gear box in my car...…..No idea if this is true or not...…….the # on the gear box is 7826692.

Jacked up the car today and I get about 3 1/4 turns lock to lock with a Grant 15" inch steering wheel.

Checked with Power steering. com...……...says that the casting # doesn't tell you what you have for gears in it...……...says most have the 16:13:1...…….so I have no idea of whats what on this deal.

Any ideas on this...……..hate to buy a different box, if this is what I already have.

The steering seems ok on the car, just seems way to easy to turn the wheel, im talking 1 finger to turn the car while turning.

Any help would be great here.

"Lock-to-lock" means NOTHING unless you also have the range-of-motion to compare to. I have a 2.5 turns lock-to-lock steering gear on my 'Camino, but the range of motion is so restricted I need forty acres to turn the thing around.

"Pinky-finger steering" is mostly a matter of the torsion bar diameter in the steering gear. A weaker, smaller-diameter torsion bar makes for easier, Grandma steering. I don't know of any application where they put a small torsion bar in a steering box with a fast-ratio gear set...but I don't know everything.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee box has the second-stiffest torsion bar, and a nice fast ratio--AND it has the proper range-of-motion to retain proper tire angle.

One thing you could look for is an ink stamped code on the end cap opposite the steering shaft.

A Monte Carlo SS box will have YA stamped on the end.

Thanks for that tip...…….I"ll try to see if I can see any other numbers.

Schurkey, I get what your saying...…..car seens to turn around fairly well, not like a new car but not all that bad either. Guess I gotta find someone who has the better steering on their car and see if I can drive it...……...just hate to spend the money for a JCG box and find out its the same as what I have now

GM G body boxes like for the MC SS and GN do not have have the same internal stops as what is needed for our A bodies. You will have reduced turning radius.

Give a call to "Turn-One" in Saginaw, Michigan. They built my box and do a lot of NASCAR boxes and can tell you exactly what you may have and or modify your current box to enhance it to suit your needs. Mine is 2.5 turns lock to lock.

I run an Iroc box in several cars. It bolts right in, and is incredibly fast and pretty heavy feeling.

It's priced right too.

I have a custom Steering Box made for my 64 GTO.
The car turns well and has the stops in the right spot for a A-Body vehicle.
It was built by Tom Lee, in California, years ago.
Unfortunately Mr Lee is no longer in business (has retired).
At the time, it was one of the best P/S boxes out there.
No clue what P.S box he started out with.
I have heard that a LOT of people like that Jeep Grand Cherokee box.

But it has the WRONG steering stops for an "A-Body", so like my car, it requires a huge turning radius.

Lee is back in business. Got bought out by his "friend and former customer", and with the "same employees". It was gone for awhile, but is now resurrected.

Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box for me, big improvement over stock, bolts right in, and cost me a total of $25.00 including the Chevy truck coupler from the local Pick and Pull.

Folks, Lares Corporation in MN can rebuild your original box with updated internals.

That is some great news, I will have to call and say hello again.
He built me a great steering box. If he still has my records I will post
the mods he did for me.

A topic of interest, valving and road feel. I bought a AGR box with 12:1 ratio and upgraded from the standard 210 valving to a firmer 220 valving. Absolutely outstanding out on the open road with the firmer valving. The upgraded valving provides a firm road feel, like what you might find in a modern sporty car like a BMW, etc, yet for my needs it's adequate for around town and related parking.

93-98 Cherokee steering box is required, Will need to adapt the metric fittings on the box if you have an older pump assembly, Borgenson makes the adapters part number 925122 this will allow the use of the stock lines, need a new rag joint as well Dorman 31011

Ahh, I see. I've run them in F Bodies and they've been great, but haven't run one in a A body.

Strange that the seller says that "most" 70-76 cars used 12.7:1 . And that if you have those years you won't notice a difference in ratio. That's just not true. They were slower, variable ratio boxes. If his boxes are really 12.7:1, you'd notice a big difference in those years, and later years too, up to the early 80's. The 12.7 boxes didn't show up until 1984, and that's why the 85-87 Monte Carlo SS box is a sought-after box. The WS6 79-81 Trans Ams only had 14:1 boxes, which were the quickest up to those years. So, I have to wonder how accurate his information is.
