ram air flapper housing seal 1969 GTO
What's the reason for the notch in the thin foam strip that goes over the top of the flapper housing? There doesn't seem to be a reason for it. Diagrams show it goes on the passenger side.
Thanks!

Resurrecting this thread as I haven't seen any answer to this question. The assembly manual shows the small notch or cutout being installed on the passenger side of the flapper assembly, in line with the actuator cable....but the cable does not pass through the foam seal and where the the seal touches the hood there is nothing protruding that would need the clearance.
Any opinions?

well, you asked for opinion here so no facts. I'd say it's a locating point for putting the seal on uniformly so it doesn't hang over one side too far if the installer started too far from the correct spot. if you drop that cutout right at the valley to the inboard side of the scoop it would force the seal to stay centered across them. Once it's squished down into the hood, that gap disappears so it doesn't compromise the seal maybe it was easier than having a notch to line up in the middle and work outward.

Thoughts. The slot may have something to do with where the hinged cable bracket bolts to flapper housing? So when flapper closes it doesn't hook onto foam or damage it?
I don't think it comes near that area but it's in line with it, and maybe GM engineers put it there thinking it would come in contact with cable bracket or retainer clamp? |
