Lived in S. FL for five years. A Cat 1 or Cat 2 storm you can “ride out”; Cat 3 and higher storms you get away from. Friends of ours in the Ft. Myers area have elected to attempt to “ride out” Ian. They are just over a mile from the beach, but live in a second story condo. We’ll be praying for them and all the others still “dug in”

It might weaken a bit before landfall. But, a mile from the beach? Hmmm. Maybe they have marble balls. |

Most of the homes near the water in Naples and Ft Myers are 14 feet above the water level and have "blow-out doors to let the water pass thru vs damage the foundation.
I have been thru hurricanes where a 45 foot palm tree was bending at a 45 degree angle. Spent 7 years in the winter months down in Naples Florida doing Track Testing. That being said, the people that live down there have been thru this routine many times. Tom V.

My inlaws are in Naples, top floor of some very nice 5 story condos, about a mile from the beach. Their retirement community has all kinds of backup generators etc. and will bus them to Orlando hotels if they get an evacuation order. I've been there a few times, their community is built like a fortress walled paradise ... but with enough flooding I guess life could become a pain. Wonder what will happen to the first level parking filled with Benz's and BMWs.

I was born and raised in Miami. I was there during a sort of hurricane lull between '65 and '92. We had some near misses but I never went through a bad hurricane. This is bad stuff though.
Best wishes to all who are going through it.

I own a winter home in Englewood Florida . Right now, I’m safe and sound in my home in upstate NY. I’m scheduled to go down 10 /. 11. There might not be a house left to go to.
All my friends in that area are hunkered down and riding out the storm. Might not be a wise choice. Looks like it’s coming ashore in that area as a cat 4. The damage is going to be catastrophic. |

My son is well inland, and more towards the ocean side of the state, but is a lineman. He said last night it will be 16 hour days guaranteed for awhile

At least FPL has replaced nearly all their wooden power poles with reinforced concrete poles. It is supposed to shorten the time needed to restore power by not having to replace poles.

I'm a Florida resident living in Port Charlotte. Thankfully my evacuation plan is spending 5 months in Wisconsin for the summer and fall. I have cameras looking out the front and back of my Florida place and right now I'm seeing rain and some wind but not too serious yet. Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Irma both went through my area and thankfully both times I only lost some roof shingles. Hoping Ian is no worse.

I'm on the Sarasota/Bradenton line. Dave Holmberg is in Port Charlotte, Don Keefe is up in Clearwater and there are a few other members in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. That area is going to get hit the worst. 33" of rain, 10-16' storm surge.
It's almost at Cat 5. Say a prayer for us. My house was built for Cat 4 and we have all of our hurricane shutters all in place. But it's still going to be dicey. |

Be safe guys!
Dave may be in the worse place, projected to be coming in there possibly. I'm currently in W Palm Beach helping the wife's aunt move. Was going to leave yesterday but waiting for Ian to leave now. (she's moving to our area which is on the path but will be TS by then)

I'll be praying for you folks I'm 30 miles from the coast in SE Texas so know full well what you are going through and will be going through for months cleaning the mess up. I expect a convoy from our utility company is being assembled right now and will be heading your way, as well as guys pulling tractors with grappler attachments on the front.

10:10....Just got a couple gusts to @ hurricane force. Wind is coming around from the E to more S component now, radar showing the eyewall should stay just to the west of us. So, so far, so good. I feel for the people on the other side of Charlotte Harbor, they should be in the eye soon, Stay safe!

Just a weird side note: Tampa Bay is actually being emptied right now from the pull of the CCW winds...
