On my 78 T/A, the heater hose nipple was at the rear on the passenger side from the factory - opposite what you have there. The driver-side head did not have one. That's the only data point I have. I can't guarantee Pontiac didn't do it differently for different body styles, etc.

Head is on wrong side. Heater nipple goes on the back of pass side.

You can leave the head and change the heater hose nipple to the other side in the back.

When the head was new, it was installed and a nipple put into the rear of the right head. I've thought about that, but after all these years of coolant flowing through that front opening, I dont think its a "round, machined hole" anymore. Has anyone tried to put a nipple in that hole and that's all that was needed? I would think erosion/corrosion would have hurt a prefect seal.

If you tried to install a intake manifold obviously it would not fit so the engine has never been run this way. Head gasket should be fine.
Remove both heads, install the proper head on the proper bank and the rest of the parts and be on your way. Common sense would tell you that the nipple on the front was wrong as soon as you tried to install the intake. You are a smart PONTIAC guy, you would have figured it out YOURSELF in a short period of time. ALL guys who own droptops are smart guys. (;>) Tom V.

I have replaced heater nipples in heads and never had a problem. Either move the head to the correct side or pull that nipple and put a new one in the other head.

AGREE!
He could probably do that fairly easily as the core plug now at the passenger side rear has never had waterflow thru it so the casting bore should be in good shape. The spot on the head with the nipple right now (once the nipple is pulled out will be rough on the edge of the hole but it does not matter as the water crossover/intake manifold gasket seals that area anyway. All of the heater hose nipples I have removed were either corroded and in need of replacement, or didn't fare too well during removal. I've never had luck removing one that was usable later. Maybe I never used the right technique.
I'd swap the head to the proper side.

Does not the driver side head that is now on the passenger side have the "core plug" up front ?

Lot of screwing around removing core plugs, adding a new heater nipple, removing an old heater nipple, installing a new core plug.
Why not just swap the heads back where they belong and quit screwing around with all of this other BS. Tom V.

At my age I would change the plug and nipple and put new ones in the proper locations. I bet the plug and nipple weigh a lot less than the heads.

Are both ends of the heads properly drilled for accessory mounts?
Are bare factory heads sold as left and right? If this was April 1st I would have just assumed this thread was a joke |

Starting in 1965 when the factory moved the heater hose inlet from the water cross-over to the rear of the passenger head, they became left and right heads for normal conversations. The factory installed the water nipple on the passenger head and that was the Right Head. (looking at the engine, (from the bumper) it is the left head but all American naming convention is from the "Driver's Seat".
Brits are standing in front of the bumper of their stuff but they also have the steering wheel on the wrong side (;>). Replacement heads were sold (as were the press-in water nipples ) as separated parts. Why replace two heads if you only have one head damaged from a broken valve stem. Tom V.
