I'd have to see it, be able to spin the crank through one complete revolution, want to make sure it has not been worked on, EVER, and at least pull the intake and valley pan to look for cracks in the block.
Been a bunch of conversation here, folks checking out leads from big time BS'er's, beware! Price seems a little high.... close enough for you to drive for a looksie???

I think I would never pay that much for a core motor. Do you need the specific casting # or date codes for a restoration?
People seem to think 428s were cast in gold. I don't see any particular value to them as the blocks won't install in the 2nd gen F-bodies without adapters, lots of them came with the small valve heads, and 4" stroke cranks are readily available in the aftermarket.

What car does it come with for $1500? The last 428 I bought for $1000 came with a 67 2+2.

No car lol , and I really don't need it . I just wanted to stash it for a future project . 428s &455s always seem scarce around these parts . Last one I saw the guy wanted $600 for just the block ! I'll keep an eye on it . So guys think the $800 range is a little more realistic for something like that ?

Assuming it needed a rebuild I would think a complete 4 bolt main engine would fetch close that, maybe more. No way a 2 bolt engine with small valve heads that needs rebuilt would be worth $1,500 in my opinion. I would think $800 would be fair if complete, turns over and assuming it needed a rebuild. Price might go up if you heard it run.

I'd probably go $800 if I needed it.... Less if I was going to just add to my stash.

It's drilled for 4 bolt mains . I couldn't make the link work but it's on the Cincinnati Craigslist . I just put Pontiac 428 in the search . He has a lot of pics of it . I appreciate the opinions !

Darn, I just missed on a complete 428 car, 1969 Pontiac GrandPrix SJ 428 HO code XG 390 HP parked in a field since the 80s for only $600 !!! I would have like to be the lucky guy on that one ...

Those pistons in the picture of the ad don't look like original 428 pistons. So I would question the "unmolested" description. $1500 is too much even if it really was unmolested complete. I agree, $800 tops if you have to have it, and it hasn't been bored already.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe all 428s are "drilled" and tapped for 4 bolt mains. I know my '73 455 is even like this.

not positive about 428's, but some 455's were only drilled for 2 bolt. saving a couple for splayed caps later on. should be a little stronger ( I think) LOL.

I will need to look into it or maybe someone more in the know can chime in. I believe all '62-'74 3.25 inch journal blocks were drilled and tapped for 4 bolt mains. I am thinking the '75 and '76 455 engines were not drilled and tapped. And yes, because there was no "lightweight" casting (like the 557 400 blocks for the 455), I think a two bolt block drilled and tapped for splayed 4 bolt mains would be a great setup. Also thinking out loud here, if it would be possible to make some sort of halo girdle for these blocks and utilize the extra bolt holes to help tie it down? Probably pointless for racers now that the IA II blocks are available.

'69 YH coded 428's are 2 bolt mains, have factory 2 bolt main caps. a few may have been fluke builds with factory 4 bolt caps. Have had a BUNCH of '69 428 YH's out of Bonneviles, a few out of Executives, they used to be very common in the yards, all tha I can remember had two bolt main caps, with outer bolt holes drilled and tapped.
'70 YH coded 455's, the base '70 455 engine on the Bonneville. Have pulled a BUNCH of these as well, most had 2 bolt main caps, though have had at least 4 that had factory 4 bolt main caps. Have two '70 455 YHs on engine transpo stands right now. '71 and 72 455's, all the HO coded engines were factory 4 bolt main (have factory 4 bolt caps). Years ago, had an extreme early G dated '70 YG coded (280 horse B series ) 455 block that was mistakenly built with 4 bolt main caps. Should have kept it! Have had a bunch of '71 455 dport blocks and quite a few '71 HO blocks. First big journal blocks that weren't drilled and tapped for 4 Bol caps that Ive ran across were two different A082 dated '72 455 code YC blocks. Have pulled over a dozen Dport 455 short blocks that were cast later in the '72 model, and all were drilled and tapped for 4 bolt caps, but AS USUAL were only equipped with factory 2 bolt caps. On '73 and '74 455 big car blocks, have only ran across three that weren't drilled and tapped for 4 bolt caps. ALL were factory 2 bolt main capped engines. '63longtop, Jim from Salina, showed me the first one about 10 years ago, a June of '73 dated big car block that also was not drilled and tapped for the outer bolts. Usually looking for 455 blocks that are not drilled and tapped for the outer bolt holes, need to watch for the '75 models. Last, something I'd love to express, unless it came from the factory with 4 bolt main caps or had 4 bolt caps properly installed, it's not a 4 bolt block! Similar to reading today's Huckster terms "PATINA" or "SURVIVOR", I'm BEYOND sick of reading the Carlot Tony ads: "car has built 4 bolt 455", the ad then continues, "2 bolt caps". Sorry, Charley, that is not a 4 bolt main 455.

That's a 1969 small valve, 2 bolt main 428. IMO, it's not worth anywhere near $1500. I don't think I'd pay more than $500 for it. It's nothing special, just the lowest rated[horsepower wise] 428 that Pontiac built. It's rated at 360 HP.
