New (to me) truck
Last week with the help of my dad I bought an 87 Ford F350. 6.9 diesel, four speed regular cab dually to replace the 78 Chevy C-10 I've been driving for the past 8 years (in my signature). The Ford does have a couple of dents, no rust and a really nice interior, six new tires, new clutch, new rear fuel tank, gooseneck and Reese hitch and 207,000 miles. The cons are I've got short somewhere that has got to be fixed before I can start driving it along with a couple of other electrical issues. Once fixed it should be the last truck I should ever need.

Nice!! I've been looking at older trucks (mid 70s to early 80s) as well, now that I have some space to park it. I'm a bit torn between a first gen dodge ram or a chevy squarebody.
This thread is no good though without a picture of your new truck.

That’s ok, you’ve seen one ford, you’ve seen them all!

Nice. It's amazing how the market has increased for the older trucks, not just Broncos.

That's because newer trucks are stupid expensive. Bonus points for older trucks is the lack of unnecessary electronics. All I need is power steering, power brakes, and tunes. Everything is unnecessary.

That engine is a dog. Had a 85 with the 6.9L diesel that could barely get out of its way. Used it for towing and would barely go 35 mph uphill loaded down. It did have dual tanks and was easy to work on.

To the OP, I hope your 'New" Ford does well for you. Since the 70's I've had 6 Ford trucks/SUVs of different generations serve me well. I still own 3 of them. My 51K mile 2001 Chevy truck and 2003 Envoy, not so much.

I've had 5 other Ford pick ups in the past. All were 76-77 models. All were small blocks except the 77, it had a 68 390 with a C6. Couldn't kill it. This is the first diesel I've owned but not my first time driving a truck with the 6.9. I used to drive Internationals that had 6.9's in them and F250's that had the 7.3 engines. Never any complaints with any of them.

I have a N/A IDI 7.3 (bigger brother of the 6.9) with 210,000 on it in a IH S1600 chassis, (ex U Haul cab and chassis, wrecker conversion) it runs like a new one. The 6.9 and 7.3 can easily go 500,000 miles with proper maintenance. I wish the 7.3 had a turbo on it, they are torque monsters, but a turbo will make them accelerate much stronger. Banks made a kit for the N/A diesels, but they're fairly rare, and go for pretty good money used. A lot to be said for the older mechanical, IDI engines. I also have 2, 6.5 Detroit Diesel T/D engines, 270,000 on the 93 K3500, and 252,000 on the C3500 HD chassis. They'll all probably outlast me |
