Alternator application
I have an alternator I'm trying to identify. At least one of the digits in the P/N has been worn down and isn't clear. 1100(then an 8 or 6 or 0?)65. It's 55 amp and also has 3K16 under the P/N. Can anybody ID this for me? I've had this thing for 20+ years and seem to recall it was for a '63 full size car, but just not sure any more.

If it is 1100665, which it pretty much has to be b/c there is nothing else close ending in 65... Book says '62-63 P-8. The "newer" service # for it is 1100694. Looks like it will work on all '64 to '66 cars using the 55 amp as well.

Yep, 52A or 55A, and if it fits non-SD '62, it's Circ-L-Aire only which is the high-amp system. (Maybe SDs also had an alternator but this is from the perspective of the non-SD owner)

Alternator application
Digging arround in some more notes on this alt. Appears when I bought it, it was advertised as for a '63 SD.
Just checked my 1971 Master Parts and Accessories Catalog dated 3-1-1971 in section 2.275 (page 2-11) and found the listing "63 P/8 S.D.-4 B.C. w T/I 1100655". The last two digits on mine are clearly 65, not 55. Boo Hoo. I can't find any alt P/N ending in 65 in this book. Guess this thing isn't anything special. Fortunately, I don't recall how much I paid for it.

I think that that 65 Pt # is out of an older book or is the original part No. I found it up in the top section above the group where it has the cross reference.
My master Pt. book goes up to '67 FWIW

Terry,
Just put it up on Ebay. All Pontiac parts are SD there. HA! Quote:

Okay, here is the full story.
O.E. Alts were supplied WITH Pulley and consequently were given specific p/ns. Service Replacement Alts were supplied WITHOUT Pulley and consequently had specific p/ns. Since many otherwise identical O.E. Alts only differed by the pulley installed on them, a single Service Replacement Alt (and single p/n) could service numerous O.E. Alts. The 1100665 Alt was an O.E. alt. The application for it was the '64 Tempest line-up with base 6 cyl motor when equipped with optional A/C, hence the need for the 55A Alt. The Date Code stamp further confirms, 3K16 being October 16, 1963. Unlike the foundry, I believe Delco skipped "I", if not, then K would be Nov., either way, early in the '64 Model Year. AFAIK, this O.E. alt had no other usage. The original Service Replacement alt was 1100633. The 1100633 serviced all 52A and 55A O.E. Alts for '63 & '64. The 1100694 was the '65 up Service Alt for 55A applications which had some improvements vs. the '64. Certainly, this Alt could have been swapped into a big car and worked fine, but the regular '63/'64 big cars did not have any 55A applications to my knowledge (52A yes, not 55A). I believe the '63 Tempest V8 had a 55A application, but believe it was O.E p/n 1100627. The SD Alts were an exception. Don't know why, but they were serviced by the O.E. p/ns (there was more than one '62-'63 SD Alt, depending on application). Not sure why, but presumably these were serviced with the pulley. BVR421, in '64 ('63 also I believe) there was a big car HD Alt option for a 62A Alt, and for the V8 with TI & A/C options for both the big car & Tempest you got a 60A Alt. |
