Formula (Ram Air) Air Cleaner
I need to replace the vacuum actuators in the snorkels of my 1971 Formula HO/RA air cleaner. I tried using the ones that Ames sells, but they're for GTO's and they will not work. (FYI, Ames told me they were not sure they would work for my application, so they're not to blame here).
It appears that both of my actuators are the same, so I'm thinking there may be just one part number for the actuators. I'm hoping someone can provide a part number for me so I can try and find NOS or aftermarket replacement actuators. I did find some that might work (see link below), but they do not sell the actuators separately, you have to buy the entire kit and I'd rather not do that yet. https://www.firebirdcentral.com/1970.../enc-2059a.htm The black actuators in the pictures are the ones I got from Ames. The rod coming out of the actuators are too long, and they point in different directions, while the original actuator rods are shorter and point in the same direction. |

If you can't find NOS, and end up using the replacements, I was able to carefully straighten the rod and then bend it in the correct direction. If needed you can change the height of the rod when you re-bend them and then trim the end after bending it as needed

I considered doing that, but the rods are not very thick, and I'm concerned that the rods will break off when I try to bend them. The rods are too long, so the first thing I would need to do is straighten them, then cut them to length, then try to re-bend them in the correct direction without breaking them. I might have to try that, but figured I would try to see if I could just buy the correct ones first. I also considered cutting the rods in the center, and cutting out a section so they're the right length, then tac welding them back together facing in the correct direction. I don't know if that would damage the vacuum pod though.

I’ve twisted the rods with no issues. Don’t scare!

Thanks. Did they show a different part number for these actuators for Ram Air cars? I'm wondering if they're different because the non RA ones are on top of the snorkel while the RA ones are on there underside. Maybe that's why the rods are shorter on mine than the GTO ones I tried using. Also, both of my actuators look the same, so I was thinking they might use the same part number for both of them.

RA is not specifically called out in the parts listing.. I checked my catalog through to 76 and it gives the same part numbers, listed as through 72.. No left/right listed for 73-76..

The rods are held onto the bellows with a rivet, spray something in there and will help them turn if needed.
