I have a 1968 pontiac bonneville no post coupe. As far as I can tell it has a 400. The block has YE 752918 on the front of the block and 248 stamped on the back by the distributor. It also has a two barrel carb on it. It think that it is supposted to have a four on it though. See the motor was rebuilt or replaced in 1973. THe carb has 7029060212xj satmped on it and the intake has 9794233 and j218. The axle has VD stamped on it. The cowl tag has a buid date of the last week of may. Any help with this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

15's were common on a lower performance 400; they were used in 1968 as a pressed stud, 75cc small valve head.
I'd guess with a two barrel if the engine has good compression it probably makes something like 250hp;depending on who's math is used to calculate hp.

most likely you have a 400 and some had 2bbls. Might be 300hp but probably more like 250hp depending on heads, two numbers are cast into the center exhaust port on each head... these two numbers will indicate which heads you have.
Your rear end is a 2:73 duration, if you want a lower geared rare 2:93 Big Pontiac Safe-T-Track positraction complete drum to drum check out e-bay under Pontiac posi. Big Ponchos are cool.

The 9790071 is the block number for a 1968 400,so the YE is the 340 HP block.
I would say it's probably like my previous post about being changed for gas mileage during the oil/gasoline crisis in 1973/1974. johnta1 Pontiac Power RULES !!! www.wallaceracing.com

The YE was a 400 in 68,with 4 bbl.
The intake, carb are correct for a 68 2 bbl setup. The 15 heads are a late year replacement in 1968. Possibly some one put the 2 bbl setup on in 1973 to get better gas mileage? (oil crisis then) Look on the back of the block below the passenger head.Should be a casting code there. Let us know what it is,will be able to tell for sure what engine it is. johnta1 Pontiac Power RULES !!! www.wallaceracing.com [This message was edited by johnta1 on November 13, 2003 at 01:18 PM.]

Thanks for taking the time all of you to post what you know. Are the #15 heads original to this car though you said that they were a late replacement does that mean that it is or isn't a 340hp car? i know that the two barrel carb will decrease the hp some, but I plan on going back with a four.I believe that you are correct when you say that it was replaced with a two. The other thing is that it doesn't have dual exhaust that too will make a change. Do I need to get some #47 heads to get the hp up or is the #15 the same just with a different casting for the late run? Also is the YE block a big block or small. I've heard that the 428 and the ram air 400 were the only ones that had the long block is this fact or fiction? I think that it is a long block though it has three freeze plug holes in each side.

Welcome to PY, The ye code for 1968 shows 400-340hp the heads should be #47 for that year.
