Has anyone out there made 2 hp/cu in. with a stock block normally aspirated Pontiac on race gas? Or with an aftermarket block? Documented (dyno sheets)?

dave johnson comes to mind and harry rienhold were getting close to 2 hp with the stock block.

Last year I made 1.94 hp/cid, this year I am crossing my fingers for 1.98. I couldn't even imagine 2 hp/cid with series 2 heads without any welding or epoxy.

Scott Rex and Jack Gaydosh are a good start for the list. Bruce Machaile(sp) maybe John Langer.

I certainly don't know either Dave Johnson or Harry Rienhold personally but I've seen both cars in Indian Adventure ads, and while both might be making more power since then, at the time both were using that block,which must assume made more power per cube than the stock block. Johnson made 841 hp @ 446 cu in (would need 892 hp for 2.0). Rick Johnson, who built the engines and eventually bought Reinhold's car, made 792 hp @ 427 cu in (would need 854 hp for 2.0)
So unless Rex Scott's 517 makes 1034 hp the answer is either one or none. |

I have understood that the stock block is only good for around 700-800hp

It depends on the generation of block, how you machine it, and your tune. I routinely make ~1500 bhp and have run the same three factory blocks for the last 5 years. One gave up the ghost last year when we had a lean-out condition from a return poppet spring failure.

Eric Johnson,John Langer and myself have each built NA engines that approached 2HP/CU In.My engine,which was my own design was 446 " and dyno'd 3 years ago at 841 hp [corrected] Eric and John's engines were larger,in the 468-470 cu in range and made more power.
All three of our engines utilized Wentzler Series 1 or 2 cylinder heads. All 3 of the cars dipped into the 8's at roughly 6.9 lbs /cu. in and approx 150 mph,or so in over 3000# cars. All three used IA blocks and billet cranks,Titanium valves and stiff cams. I figure I was making at least 1.95 hp/cu in last year. 2 hp/cu/cu in may have been feasible but with huge costs. With a smaller engine it would have been accomplished.The cylinder heads,of coures are the limiting factor and the Wentzler Series 1 and 2 heads are limited in intake flow to about 360 cfm, without reducing the exhaust flow,which is counterproductive. |

The plate is to locate the engine in the car for better torque transfer by eliminating the flex in the engine mounts. The cracks in the block are caused from the internal stresses of the torque transfer through the block. If I remember correctly Pontiac's generally fail through the lifter galley and split lengthwise down the block. Because it's hp per cube the size is not the issue. For argument's sake- 400 cubes and up.

Scott Rex is the only one I know thats made 2hp/cid on motor and he is in the fastest list at 7.68
I don't know a lot about Bruce and the others mentioned combos, they may have done it also. It's sure to be a very short list. -Rob |
