I am going to be swapping my 389 for a 455 sometime in the near future. What I need advice on is the following so I can get the correct parts:
1. Will I be able to install all my '65 389 parts that are pulley driven (WP/Dampner/PS/Alt) on the front of a 455? I am going to a 11 bolt water pump w/ a 1971 timing cover and will probably be using either 6x or #96 heads.
2. Will the pulleys line up or is the dimensions of the 11 bolt different?
3. What else do I need to consider?

Thanks.... Jim

I did something similar to what you are doing. I put a 71 timing cover w/ 11 bolt waterpump on a 68 pontiac 400 engine/heads. I used all the brackets/pulleys from the 71 engine, but I did have to deal with the fact that my 68 heads did not have a bolt hole that the 71 altenator pivot bolt screwed into.

Dear Jim:
I'm a graduate from the "School of Hard Knocks" for Pulleys.
Please let me save you some Torment and GRIEF !!!!
The 11 bolt pump snout is quite longer than the early ones, you won't (easly),find a water pmp. pulley to reach deep enough for belt alignment to ALL other pulleys.
Best Bet is to use Pulley and all accessories from a motor or donor which utilized an 11" water pump

Thanks, Dave.. I may take you up on the offer for parts at some point in the future. I do have P/S. I have a 1973 400 that I am going to install as is or stroke.. have not decided yet. Either way it's the same issues as far as mounting for the Alt and P/S pump. I have a set of #96 and #13 heads but have not done a side by side comparison with my #76 heads on the 389 to see what holes are there (or not) yet.

I second "2badcat" and "cujo" I went through hell with brackets and pulleys. both my 11 and 13 heads do not have the alt spacer bolt hole, and there is no pad so you can't tap. If this the case, you will need to track some early seventies setup. I have a whole bunch of left overs if you find in need. If no power steering, I would suggest the alt relocation kit from BOP, It will end a lot of headaches.

You may need to put some spacers [about 1/4 inch thick] behind the power steering pump bracket.

Thanks ScapeGoat... I knew you meant 11 bolt.. This is kind of what I figured but I thought I'd ask.
