I have a set of repro D-port exhaust manifolds that I want to put on my 67 goat. I would prefer to use studs instead of bolts to mount the manifolds to the heads. Does anyone know of a source for grade 8 studs for this application?

try a local parts store if they don't have them they should be able to order them.
why do you want grade 8 for exhaust? it would seem to me that the heat would eventually take the temper out of them anyway. just curious, mike [ September 14, 2002, 10:58 AM: Message edited by: mike nixon ]

I tried a parts store with no success, but you're right. I should try another place. As far as the grade 8 goes, I think you can safely torque them more than untempered fasteners. I don't know what alloy grade 8 fasteners are typically made from, but in my experience with heat treating tool steels, temperatures well over 1200 degrees are required to aneal tempered steels. What this all means is if this highly technical metalurgical theory is bull-sh--, I can resort to the truth and say "couldn't hurt". |

if the parts store doesn't do you any good try a machine shop or a farm implement dealer. either of these should be able to order what you want.

The torque spec on the RA manifolds is only 35lbs. I think where the grade 8's will come in handy is 5 years from now when you need to take them out. Should be less likely to break. David

2nd on the anti-seize. I like the way it gets on your fingers at the worst possible times. Makes starting a bolt with your hand wedged up in some impossible location a challenge. David
