I'm installing 1 3/4"hedmans on my 69 firebird, automatic, console shift. The passenger side went right on. Much easier than I anticipated. The driver side is giving me problems. The header is striking some shifter linkage. It is a rod from the trans. going to a lever bolted to the frame, with another rod coming up vertically to the steering column. This lever is what the header is striking, not the rods. In my service manual, it looks like the diagram for the column shift car. As my car is a console shift car, I assume this is actually some sort of steering column lock or reverse lock-out, maybe? If this is the case, can I just disconnect this stuff with no other ill effects other that the lock out not being functional? I live in a state that doesn't have inspections so that wouldn't be a problem. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I maybe mistaken but doesn't that rod control your neutrol safey and backup lite switch.

I'm not really sure. If it was for the back up lights, and I disconnected it, would I not have back up lights or would the back up lights be on all the time?

What tool do you use for installing the header bolts? I can't seem to fit anything in between things to get a good grip on the head of the bolt. I've used sockets and tried with a small torque wrench but nothing seems to fit. I have a '86 Trans Am with a Chev 350 (383 Stroker now) Any help? Oh, they're Heddmans!

Jeff the back up lights will not work but you will you be able to start the car in any gear as long as the as you leave the dohichy on the column in the neutral position. But as a rule it will move and 1 day you won't be able to start the car til u move it back. If its a street car with multiple drivers I would try to find a way to retain the linkage, convert it to a cable system or install a neutral safety and backup switch in your console such as the 67 + 68 had..Alan
