Has anyone got experience with running another heater hose to the left head? I mean a "Y" fitting after coming out from the firewall, then running hoses to both heads, instead of just to the right head like stock Pontiacs. Why not cool the other side? If this has been done, are there any modifications to the head (besides popping out the plug and installing the hose fitting!) and/or block or manifolds or anything else, to accomodate the flow to that side? What else would change? Or is this a ridiculous, (totally uneccessary work if everything else is OK) idea? We all know that our beautiful Pontiacs run hot & I've always thought are not well engineered in the cooling area. I believe I've seen this discussed before here. Thanks again for the input.

Yes, but pulling out the freeze plug at the rear of the dirvers head may be tricky depending on how tight the engine compartment is.

This has been discussed before. The supposed benefit is more even cooling between the cylinder banks. You wouldn't see any actual temperature reduction from doing this, but in theory it helps both heads run at the same temperature. I'm going to be doing this in my new engine.
As far as empirical evidence of whether it really works or not, I'm not aware of any. It's just one of those "looks good on paper and can't hurt anything by trying it" ideas. -Will

Thanks again, Will. I thought I saw it here before. I remember my bro talking about it,as far back as 1971 with his '68 Firebird 400. I agree, if it can't hurt I'll try it!

I did just this with the 455 in my 79 T/A. Think about it. By having an "escape" at the rear of the drivers side head, it allows the #5 and #7 cylinders to run cooler (or at least more evenly with cylinders #6 and #8). This prevents hot spotting in the head around #5 and #7, which helps decrease the chances of detonation in those two cylinders.

I'm running a 455 +.035 Car ran to 230 degrees. Put a y in the line and walla! 190 degrees to 200. GO FOR IT!!
