I recently became involved with 61-63 Tempests having been a Corvair collector for some time. My first Tempest was a 61 wagon with a powerglide. My newest is a 62 convert. with a 3 speed. My difficulty is with the position of the shift lever, it's under my leg in the reverse/first gear position. With my long legs and the position of the bucket seat it is a very uncomfortable and unsafe place for the lever. Now I know that the shifter housing is bolted to the side of the torque tube, but the position seems so wrong. Is it because of wear or misalignment or is this the way these shifters came from the factory? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Haven't had thet problem, I'm 6'-3.5" tall, my shifter stays clear of my bunched up legs. It does hit the seat in first, however. My guess is that you could just bend the shifter stick to the right a bit to solve the problem, probably should remove it from the car before you do that. The actual shifting mechanism is inside the transmission, the rod that goes from the shifter to the tranny changes gears by rotating and moving axially. My point is that it is not going to screw up the shifter if you bent the stick a little to the right.

I can't say if it's right,wrong,due to wear or just built that way, but I have a 61'with a 3 speed and I have the same problem. Maybe they were not built for people over 6 feet. Donnie
