I bought a 389 block from someone at work.I wanted to get it cleaned up and just put it away in case I would need it some day.I took it to my local machine shop to get the work done.The machinist said he was haveing a hard time finding pistons,rings and rods for it.He said it has to be 40 over.I dont know what year motor it is.I thought one of you guys could tell me so I can start my search.The only numbers I can find on it is 9778789 and 588093 yc.Any chance any one can tell what year this is?

Do yourself a favour and when it comes time to bore it, use std 400 pistons. Then you can use std 400 chev rings and file fit them, for a fraction of the price. It'll work out to be about 0.060 over. You can get cast pistons with both valve reliefs or use forgies with the later valve reliefs which will allow you to use later heads when you get sick of the ever always pinging early closed chamber jobs.

I redid my 389 with 400 pistons. At the time it was cheaper to go with forged 400 pistons over the cast 389. Plus you can go with the later big valve heads without worrying about the valve reliefs. If you have the budget go with a stroker kit, you can make that 389 into a 453.

ditto thats what i did too . 060 over with 400 pistons and wenzler heads . anyone want a set of 389 heads ? anyone?

Another alternative to a stroker kit which would be cheaper is to get a 428 crank turned down to 3" and with the proper thrust bearing conversion that Pdude sells and bore to 4.120" with 428 pistons could be a 428.

Speed Pro 389 pistons are readily available. Good stuff. I would advise against boring it .060 as it WILL clean at .040. These things are getting a bit on the rare side. The $100-$200 you may save would be offset the next time you went to build it, by NOT having to find another block (at .060, they are done). It's helpful in these cases to look at the long term, and not just the immediate future.
