I am a bit confused over what is the correct distributor part number for my 1972 TA. I have an automatic transmission. I was of the understanding that the 72 TA came with an optional unitized distributor (P/N 1112133). Is this a true fact? If so, what is the 'standard' distributor part number without this option? My build sheet does not call out the 634 sales code.

Please help clarify since it is not obvious in the 72 service manual and I can't seem to find literature that clarifies this information.

In 1972 the Trans Am is the only 455 HO equipped vehicle to come with a points distributor as standard. P/N used is 1112126.

The unitized distributor #1112133 was a mandatory option on 455 HO equipped A-body and Firebird Formula.

As far as I know all 72 455-HO had unitized ign only, good luck locating these parts.

The 1972 455 HO Formulas had the unitized ignition as a mandatory option. The Trans Ams came standard with the #26 point dist and the unitized model was optional. My car has the WD coded block with the point distributor. The WM came with the unitized. Similar with the YB=points and YE=unitized. The PHS sheet will tell you if your car had it, if you dont have the buildsheet.

I checked the block again to be sure. The block is a YE code and matching number. I bought the car from the original owner, have the paperwork right down to the purchase docs he signed when he took delivery of it in Feb 1972, Protecto Plate and PHS docs. Car was built 2nd week Dec 1971. My PHS docs don't mention the unitized distributor option but the car is a YE code block. Has anyone heard of a situation where it was not called out on the build sheet but in fact came with the unitized distributor. I suppose with GM, anything is possible.

The 72 455 HO engine codes for the unitized distributor were YB for the automatic and WM manual transmission. The points distributor codes were YE and WD.

Your TA is correct with a YE block and a points distributor. The points distributor number is 1112126.

I have one that is very nice, still has the purple paint stripe on it from the factory. I pulled it from a '72 back in about '82 when the car had around 50K miles on it.

Steve, just because the UAW went on strike does not mean their suppliers went on strike. It also does not mean it is not a SR part. If I thought for one second this was a restamp, I would not have mentioned I had it. Will you take Lloyds word on it if not mine? It is in Lloyds possession right now and he has seen it up close and personnal. And no, he has not bought it.

I believe it might be a good idea for one of the more knowledgable dudes to chime in on this one, 'cause to ME it appears that there's NO WAY this distributor is a restamp.

Yes, the "1112" appears to be a deeper stamping than the "126". But the font is the same and the machining marks on the housing are undisturbed. So . . . my theory, which Chris and I discussed while he was at my shop, is that at least on a SR distributor the first four PN characters were "pre-stamped" and the final three characters - which would determine the exact application - were stamped when the piece was assembled.

Secondly, Chris is a stand up guy and no way he's trying to sell a re-stamped part. Besides all that, I doubt anyone was restamping '72 distributors 24 years ago when Chris removed it from an engine.

Sorry, I should have snapped some pics yesterday, but I forgot to and it's still at the shop. I'll try to snap some pics on Monday and post them here.
