Default QJet flooding after WOT and at startup

I've looked thru all old posts on this, my issue seems a little different. In the last 2 weeks, occasionally on morning starting, carb floods and spews gas onto manifold. This occurs after depressing throttle fully to set choke and engine starts quickly, then bogs, blows black smoke. Often, a few quick stabs at throttle will clear this up and engine settles in at fast iddle till warm. Sometimes/not always takes a larger than normal tap on throttle to kick choke off. Car then runs very well. Today, same thing. Just got gas and added carb cleaner to tank. Was out having "normal fun" and after leaving a light at WOT then slowing for traffic, it was obvious it was flooding again. Pulled over/car died/took off RamAir pan/wiped up fuel/started car and all was fine. Tried same thing at a few minutes later with same results. Seems as long as I stay out of the secondaries there is no problem, even did prolonged highway run. Runs and idles perfectly.
Specifics of car:
70 RAIII 400, TH400, stock RAIII carb (rebuilt 5 years ago), mechanical Carter fuel pump and in line filter after pump (none in carb)... pump and filter installed about 3000 miles ago. Never any issues till now. Car is driven every day weather permits... never sits for prolonged periods. All linkages look fine/unbent/not binding on anything. I have not needed to do any kind of work under hood, other than polish the valve covers in a long time, so it's not like anything has changed or been hit/bumped, etc.
My first thoughts were stuck float or garbage on needle seat, until this occured after driving at WOT. Could still be, just seemed odd.
Thanks in advance! I appreciate any ideas before I tear carb down or send it out for work.

Diffantantly sounds like a needle and seat problem to me. Along with maybe a sticking power valve??

Yeah, could still be the needle and seat. A WOT blast will lift the needle more open, maybe to a point is is sticking on varnish and occasionally not reseating.

"This occurs after depressing throttle fully to set choke and engine starts quickly, then bogs, blows black smoke." - a classic q'jet fault that causes this is a torn diaphragm in the choke pull-off on the passenger-side front of the carb . Disconect the short piece of hose and suck a vacuum on the pull-off. It should retract and stay retracted.
By the way, it is not necessary to floor the gas pedal to set the choke. Just a small amount is enough, until you hear the click of the choke plate closing. But flooring can help get a car started if it has been sitting a few days.

" Pulled over/car died/took off RamAir pan/wiped up fuel" - this puzzles me a bit. I am not sure what Ramair pan looks like, but normally flooding a carb does not require wiping up fuel. It all goes into the intake. Are you getting fuel into the base of the air cleaner?

I may add a fuel soaked float, the little inlet needle clip hung in one of the tiny holes on float lever causing the inlet needle to bind?
This clip should be hung at the rear edge of the float lever.

Where is Cloud9 that it's so cold you need to fully depress the gas to start the car in May? I'd be expecting 1/4--1/2 pump maximum. Is your choke pulloff adjusted properly and functional?

None of that addresses the WFO problem. Any chance the carb/manifold is getting too hot under load so as to boil the fuel? (exhaust flow through the intake manifold crossover because of an exhaust restriction including the heat riser valve not fully open.) That's the only thing I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned.

sounds to me like this is a secondary issue. I have seem these carbs stick after wide open throttle. the next time it does this take the air cleaner off carefully not to disturb the linkgage and see if the lower secondary plate is slightly open. It's usually the linkage that connects the primary to the secondary that would be binding

Thanks guys! Malky: No gas in ram air pan... all of it is outside pan (on carb and manifold). It is either working it's way between pan/gasket/carb, or leaking from the pan's drain holes. The carb itself is not leaking. The ram air pan is just a fancier snorkel base... serves the same purpose. Also, due to throttle position causing this problem, I planned on checking choke assembley. Shurkey: Agreed, seldom need full depression of pedal for choke... can't say I don't press it that far though without thinking. No heat riser... headers. Vapor lock/boiling has never been an issue over the years with this car and this exact same setup. Doesn't mean it couldn't be, but has not been. Plus exact scenario happens at cold start.. occasionally. I also use heat resistant and steel braided racing fuel line from pump to carb.
necdb: I want to check that also... should be able to view linkage without removing pan... hopefully. Then won't have to disturb anything!
I am also super careful to never tighten aircleaner nut any more than is necessary to just hold everything in place.
Thanks again all!!

I figure to get that much gas on the outside of the carb and on the manifold, you are spewing gas out of the bowl vent. So you have a major needle/float sticking problem. That's where I would start.

I agree Marlky. I am not impressed with the situation. Figures the ***** starts acting up now (beautiful weather!!). Gonna tear the QJet down and find out the issue. Gotta be a issue when it needs a tissue! Guess I have to consider myself lucky to get 5 years from the last rebuild!!! Anybody know how to contact the carb king???
