Bouncing Speedo from 0 to 35 - What To Do?
This is in my 71 Bird , new cable and tranny but old Ralley Gauge. The 160MPH bounces up to 35 and then is fine - also seems to "tick" at lower speeds. I had a later model one so I figure I'd drop that one in and send the 160 out to be rebuilt. I don't hear any ticking but it bounces up to around 40 and then smooths out.
Any ideas? Is this a symptom of an old speedo head that is worn? Also, any recommendations on who to send a speedo head to for fix'n? Thanks! Mark

The cable is definitely not engaging in one end or the other. I had the same thing on my car. I had speedo over about 60mph but not before. My cable had gotten very stiff and it had caused the end to round out the keyed hole in the speedo gear.
BTW, how do you get that out. I removed the thing that looks like a distributor hold down but the retaining plate for the speedo gear was still solidly in place and wouldn't budge. Anyway, something to check. Sam

Hi guys, so don't assume the new cable is ok? I'll check both ends and see how it looks.

I've seen this before. Sometimes new is old and lubricant dries out.
Pull out the inner cable from the housing at the cluster end (no need to remove cable housing from car again). Pick up some graphite "powder" and on a sheet of newspaper sprinkle the graphite all over the cable & rub it in (B**** of a time washing this stuff off) reinstall. Carlos |

I would properly LUBE the cable.
Erratic operation of the speedo head is 99% of the time due to a dry cable. Tom V.

No need to pull the cable from the sheath, detach the cable from the speedo head and drip 2-3 drops of Marvel Mystery Oil or other light oil into the sheath and reattach the cable to the speedo. If equipped with the dual cable cruise control, also lube the lower cable @ the cruise unit. Excessive oil will migrate into the speedo head or drip onto the carpet.

Had the same problem as Hawk, it was the plastic gear inside the transmisson that had slipt of the retainer clip. I put it back on , and then it started bouncing. the clue is to senter it on the axle.
