Started a project on sunday. My friend (67whitetrashbird)
has a 67 bird with alot of potential that we are going to
do a budget build street/strip car. His friend has a 98 dodge
viper and doesn't believe
that we can build this car on a budget to beat the Viper. I know what
potential a lightweight car has with a decent Pontiac and a little
squeezy squeeze on it. Here's the plan, build his car with my old
parts laying around the garage, 670 heads ($300 port job), th400 trans,
good cam, converter, BOP 10 bolt, and tires. We're going to take both
cars to the track and spank this 100,000 turd, maybe we'll move on
to street bikes after that . Here is how we got started over the weekend.

I've beat a couple of $100,000+ cars on the street, they look
really mad after that. haha. Especially the Lamborgini and ferrari guys.

That looks alot like the Chevy "Vega" converters we use to race with. I had one in a 79 Malibu that would footbrake to 2800 rpm! The car ran 11.80-11.90's I had a friend who ran one in a 1964 Chevy II running 6.90-7.10 1/8th mile times with one! All we did was cut off the heat shield and sometimes had to drill the flexplate. Since the Vegas were small motor cars when you put the converter behind a V8 it would really stall! Just an FYI JD

Last weekend a new GTO and Ford lightning truck came to town, I raced both, the GTO I took by 5 cars, the Ford..he gave up just when I hit 2nd and started shooting away like a rocket (455+3.23 gears) I know these are maybe 13 sec vehicles, but my station wagon looks bone stock, stock hood, bench seat, not even a tach and 14" rally rims.

Low buck giant slayers, nothin better . Are you using a 400 or 455 block? what kind of internals? and subsequently, how much squeeze?

400.......all stock with a nice cam.
100-150 shot at the most.
Should be a 12 second car no problem.

I have a 125 shot, hit in in 2nd, I was figuring the GTO had something up his sleeve, but when I looked back and saw nothing in my rear mirror I just short-shifted to 3rd and rode it out.

Try and get a vid of this race, Id love to see a Viper get schooled.

You should be hitting the unit out of the hole.
I'll get the vid up, should race the viper by the spring or summer.

Good luck Mr Pushrod looks fun. I was able to whip up on quite a few cars in Reno when I lived there with my 13.32 second times when I had the 350 Pontiac in Firebird. I never did put NOS on it, but would have probably cracked the 12s with a 350 if I did.

What most don't realize is that a 13.32 on the street or track is fast.
Low 13's beats 90% of cars on the road.

That is the truth. I remember racing a guy in Reno on Military Road in Stead that claimed his 76 Camaro ran low 12s. I asked him if he had any timeslips and he said no, but that is what his car runs. I told him I would race him, but my 13.32 wouldnt be much of a match for his car. I beat him by probably close to 10 car lengths and he kept telling me my car was faster than I what I said it was all the while I was showing him my timeslip from the previous weekend out at the Fallon raceway.

The real kicker of this story was I raced him while my car was low on gas and you guessed it ran out of gas on the way home to Lemon Valley. I would not leave my car on the side of the road and there was no telephones for 2 miles so I pushed my car the whole way to the gas station. I was one tired puppy.

Your best asset will be an auto in the Pontiac. It is a BEAOCH to get these stick shift cars going. My GTO will run a 12.70 in total street trim, but that is just a 2.20 60 ft. I can't give it any gas in 1st or it will fry the tires.

The viper probably has 335 tires on the back, luckily it only has the 450 horse motor. Don't underestimate the viper, it is still an 11 sec car in stock form. If he bolts up some slicks or drag radials it could get interesting. I have seen alot of these new cars that they say will do this and that, but when they get to the strip the BS stops. They rarely get within a half second of what the Car and Driver test drivers can get out of them. I was at the strip two weeks ago and watched a new Z06 thrash down to a 11.80 with drag radials after about 5 runs. They are supposed to do 11.70 with stock tires. Not with that driver.

We will definatly have a th400 and a nice lil' converter.
They rate that year viper at 12.20's from the factory, remember.....that's
perfect conditions, proffesional driver and a sticky track......at sea level!
We are at over 5000', he can't drive and he has regular radials . 13.50 car all day baby . Easy money.

haha, good story, yeah I've ran into "those" guys that claim this crazy number with their cars, they're the ones that give you the money when you

Thanks, funny because we're going to beat his "super car" on
a budget . I've seen older vipers like this one run 13.50's all day
at our track, weak for a 450 hp car, but then again cars are rated
at sea level, not at 5500' elevation. Hopefully by the summer we'll
have the video of it all.

The last time I saw a Viper V10 at KCIR it ran a 12.10 ET @114 mph. I'm not claiming they all run this fast but make sure you bring enough Pontiac power to put you in the 11's to be safe! Go get um!!! JD

We're racing an older viper, 1998. I've been to the local track and saw one go 13.50's
all day long, pretty sad. Plus, the guy we're racing doesn't know
how to launch the car.......it's on street tires as well. Should be a turd,
happy to take his $$$$$$. .
This little budget injun should be a killer.
A 12 second car at our altitude is fast, on a hot day at the track the altitude
is 7000' sometimes .
