I have 19" wheels on my '05 GTO but I would never go larger than 16", 17" max on a mid sixties car. It just doesn't look right. FWIW, I have 14" Cragars on my '64 GTO and plan on going with 14" steel wheels/hub caps or 14" Magnum 500's on the '65 Chrysler I'm restoring.

there are a lot of old school wheels to pick from....that is a clash of styles.

17's, possibly 18's MAX on a 66-67 GTO. You could stretch it out to 20's, but you'll have to pay extreme attention to stance and ride height and wheel choice to get it to even remotely look not like complete and utter dog chit. For that reason, stick with 17's or 18's. Also, your choice in rim style is absolutely horrific. 6 spokes belong on trucks with 6 lugs. Stick with a 5 spoke of some kind.
Some Boyd Coddington Junk Yard Dogs would look good, as would Smoothie 2's, both in the classic series, as would the Two-Tone's in the Gotcha Series. Intro Wheels also offers a bunch of nice wheels that would look good on that car in their exposed series, like the Vista, V-Rod 5, and the Ram 5. Their Classic Wheel in the Endless Series would also look great and they are cheap. Poke around. Just ditch the ugly ass rims your considering now, trust me. OH!! as for the '66 LeMans in Livermore, it used to belong to some other guy before the current punk picked it up. It used to have the perfect stance riding around on 17" TT2's. It HAD a very healthy sounding 455 in it, not sure if its still in there as the car sounded kind of sickly the last time I saw it.

What makes that GTO above look good with 17's and 18's, is that the wheels still look "right" with the car. The Torq Thrust is a classic design, and larger sizes still complement the style and vintage of the car. Those multi-spoke wheels are horrendous, however. Stick with classics on a classic, and it'll work. And what was said about the risks of the zero-sidewall tires is not fiction- it is reality. Unless you live where there are literally no potholes or major road bumps, those low-profile tires are simply not functional. I read, I believe it was in either R&T or MT (but could have been MPH- can't remember exactly) the story of one of the editors, who wanted to upgrade the factory wheels on his car (a late model). He was thinking about 17's, but someone offered him an irresistable deal on some 18's. About two months after suffering the harsh ride, he blew out not one, but two of the tires, on a not particularly large pothole. When he went to get the tires replaced, they found that not only were those two rims bent, but even the ones with intact tires had been bent by hits of less severity than the one that claimed the other two tires/wheels. His final comment was that he should have known better, and that now he's stuck with several thousands of dollars of worthless, bent wheels. Unless you don't plan to drive the car, or only drive it on bowling alleys, seriously consider the functional realities and necessity of sufficient sidewall height. |

I'll warn you, be prepared for some not-so-pleasant responses... There are a lot of old school people here who don't think much of those big wheels.
Personally, on a '66/'67 I'd say 17" is about as big as you can go without looking funny. I've seen a few '68 and newer GTOs with 18" rims that looked good but that's stretching it (no pun intended.) It is your car, though, so make it look the way you want it. |

I know that GTO's are not Miata's but unsprung weight is none the less important, check out the weight of the 20" combinations, far too heavy. Those tires and wheels were made for looks with a few exceptions, and you will pay a price, too high in my opinion. Larry |

Tasteful 17" rims are the max for almost all older cars. Anything more looks like chit.

hmmm
wow - thanks guys for the comments
1. I have the stock 14x6 on there now rally wheels they look really cool 2. I am 30 having sold my new jetta to get this car ... so the generation gap is there and I do understand that old muscle cars should have that certain old school look ( not into gangsterish crap either ) but when I watch overhaulin and see chip put nice wheels on all the old school cars they make them look really clean and nice ... and thats a compliment on the shape of these older car bodies ... i am looking towards the black and silver wheel and not some big chrome thing

Three words come to mind.
Hammered dog sh!t. Sorry, old musclecars shouldn't have rims larger than 16" max on them...any larger and they just don't look right.

Robbie-
Those "black and silver wheels" are called Rally II's. I have a set of four 15x7 Rally II wheels for sale. I used them for about a year before purchasing new ones. PM me in you are interested. Jeff |

Im not too crazy what Foose does to most of the cars he works on. I went with Torque Thrust Originals, 15x8.
