What is the easiest way to separate the front hub from the drum assembly? I'm doing my front Wilwood conversion on my '63 and I'm trying to save myself a headache.

Hammer out the studs & knock the drum off the hub.

Messed up 1 drum hammering them out and another trying to press them out. The factory studs are roller or pressed on the drum side to hold the drum to the hub. I used a 4.5" grinder with a thin cut off wheel and cut the studs off flush with the face of the drum and then I was able to hammer the heads out.

Just what pontbil said, they were never designed to separate, so Pontiac put those 5 studs in to stay! they are swaged around the diameter so that the stud grips the drum onto the hub, HARD. To convert to discs you have to get the drum off, so that you can re-use your original hub. Mark at Scarebird did one side of my car for me, & also put some longer 1/2" studs in AND HE did a fantastic job!! I was blasting down the freeway yesterday evening with the top down at 70-75 miles per hour without a care in the world!!!

I just hammered them out. All but one came out pretty easy (even the tough one wasn't that bad). Hub separated from the drum pretty easy too. Oh, it's so nice to work on a near rust free car!
It looks like the 4311 Mr. Gasket wheel studs I have are a little too big. I don't think I could even get them in with a press. It's just too much extra material. I'm going to have to open up the hole a little or try to find a smaller stud....Since I already have the studs I'm leaning toward just opening up the hole a hair. This is my first disc conversion, any input is appreciated.

Does anyone know the correct knurl diameter of the stock hub? I just looked on Summit and my Mr. Gasket 4311 studs are .665 in diameter.

I used Moser MSR-8368 1/2-20x1.75 .625 knurl
I did however need to countersink the rotors a little to fit flush. I also run a 1/4" Baer billit spacer so my Cragars will clear the calipers. ( dont buy cheap spacers ) |

My memory is a little fuzzy here but it seems i used a 22/32 bit to countersink 1/4 in.
fit like a glove. |
