Has anyone raced their car like you drive it on the street? I like to compare my car to the new performance cars like Corvettes, Vipers, GT500s and all that, so i run it on regular street tires, full exhaust, sway bars hooked up, everything just like I drive it.
My best is a 12.56 @114 with a 2.05 60ft My basic combo is a 67 GTO at 3550 lbs 461 KRE d-ports 455 RWHP hyd roller TKO 600 3.73 rear 295/45/18 Nitto 555 (non drag) Please list your combo too. |

Um . . this is the "race" section. Sounds like you're talking about streetcars there.

![]() Gearbanger, are you looking for times from street cars or any car running a non-drag tire? There's 'Vette running in F.A.S.T. that gone 10.30 @130 on repro Firestone Wide-Ovals. Then there's the guy from Ohio, I can't remember his name, that has a '78 Catalina sleeper that's been in the 10's on a set of Walmart white wall radials.

[/QUOTE]I saw this Catalina at Norwalk a few years back for the first time.. I saw him in the quick 16 shootout, my first impression was that he got in the wrong lane. Man, those whitewalls hooked.....

Yeah that's the guy! I should have known he was from Illinois, as Hooter introduced me to him. I talked to him for a while at VMP a couple of years ago- real nice guy too.

Goatless, Yes I was talking about cars with non drag tires on them just because is you talk about drag radial cars, you are opening it up to the drag radial classes that run 8s like P-dude or some of these Mustangs. I love the F.A.S.T racing, I have been keeping up with it and I am amazed with the 60 ft times they cam pull! The corvette you are talking about can get a 1.6x 60 ft and there are a couple of mopars in there that can do 1.50 60' times on little 70 series Firestones! My goal is to run high elevens in full street gear. It is great to hear about the other combos that run in street trim. It is pretty fun to drive it to the strip and pull straight onto the track and knock of a 12 or even 11 second pass. |

Cliff, that is a good illustration of something that I have always heard but really don't understand. You lost about 2.5 tenths off your 60 ft time but ran exactly the same mph in the quarter. I have always heard that traction didn;t really affect the mph but darned if I understand why?
It seems like if you accelerate less then your mph would be less over the same distance. Guess not though? |

I have been 9.40's (146mph) on the D.O.T. BFG radials with full exhaust. That was about 7/8 years ago. 428 cu.in.

I like the poster's question except for the exclusion of the drag radials only because they are so commonly found on street cars these days, it takes more than a double take to notice sometimes. There is a wide variety of "drag" radials. I know the Nitto's I run on the T/A are harder and longer lasting than the MT's I plan to replace them with but the Nitto's are still softer than a normal radial. I've run in the mid to high 12's with my Nitto's but that was also with the front sway bar disconnected. In any case I can't launch this M6 hard with much success either way.

Typically it seems the new performance cars mentioned in the lead post all have big wide tires with a soft compound right from the factory. This might not compare to many Pontiac street cars with smaller tires due to the room available in the wheel wells.
I have to agree on the Nitto drag radials not being in the same league as the other DOT drag radials. I use them as a street tire on my Trans Am since they are capable of getting decent milage compared to the others. With a previous 462 street combo I drove to the track and lowered the air pressure on the Nittos and ran 11.02, then put 28 lbs back into them and drove home. |

The last run I made with my car this year was 11.64 @ 120mph. The 3 previous runs were 11.41, 11.40, and 11.39, all at 120mph with 1.61 60' times. We had the M/T Drag Radials in place, but there was ZERO traction available on the starting line. I annialated them all the way through first gear and part way into second gear. This resulted in a 1.85 60'. I figured the run would have been in the mid to high 12's. I couldn't believe it when I got the time slip!.....Cliff

Your ET is calculated as soon as you break the beams till you trip them again at the end of the 1/4.
The MPH is calculated by a pair of timing lights at the 1/8th mile and the 1/4 mile. Your MPH is determined by how accelerate thru those two sections not the entire 1/4 mile. |

Well...actually it is calculated by how much time it takes you to cover the speed trap distance, it doesn't have anything to do with acceleration, but what I am saying is....
It is hard to understand how wasting time at in the first part of the track doesn't result in lost mph at the end of the track. I have even heard people say that spinning a little off the line actually causes the mph to jump up a little. I can't understand the physics behind it. |

gearbanger, I did some checking of the FAST numbers and as far as I know the 'Vette is the only one to run a 1.5X 60. There are several cars that are running 1.6's. The downside is that while these are street tires any of the cars running these kind of numbers are anything but street cars.
![]() My own '69 Lemans has managed a 1.90 60' on G-70 14's despite being overweight, underpowered and under geared. The plus side is that it was running exactly the same way setup I run on the street.

Goatless, I was just going from memory too. I thought Dudek and another mopar were in the 1.50s because they are so quick but I guess it is just low 1.60s. Still that is unbelievable!
I heard a couple of Youtube videos of FAST cars and I really don't think they enforce that "stock sounding" very strickly. They sounds quite a bit beefier that stock. I know what you are saying about them not being street cars though. It is impossible to define what a street car is, but I am talking more about pump gas, street radials, full exhaust, no loose suspensions that arent safe in curves, and can sit in traffic without getting hot. Kind of like the pump gas drags with real street tires on them

The only changes I personally made were to unload everything from the trunk (you practically live out of your car for five days ) air down the back tires, check the oil, and head for the staging lanes. No trailers, no slicks, no open headers, no race gas. Just like it goes down the highway, even the Simpson kiddie seat in back. The car ran it's best ever of 10.59 @ 124 on local gas station 92 octane, full length exhaust, front and rear sway bar, and front shocks set to the stiffer end of the range (pos. 9 of 12).Now I will admit that I was on a set of M/T drag radials, but how can you deny that as an every day street tire when I just completed 1500 miles of drive through four states (600 miles in the rain!!!). ![]() It's actually the only tire I own for the back of the car. Someday I'll try the legit radial (non DR) and see how scary it is!

I drive my 63 tempest with a 421---980 super duty heads----859 2x4 super duty intake on the street went 11.67 @ 112 with 1.59 60ft. @ Norwalk this year. But it does have the M/t drag radials for the street on it. Makes a habit of stopping at ever other gas station.

My son and I drive our Catalina to the track, let air out of the rear tires, and thrash it for all it's worth. Then put air in the rear tires and drive it home.
