I have a 1967 GTO with 14"x7" rally one rims, and 14x70 diamond back redline tires, and no spare. I"m not thrilled with the idea of spending the money for tire, rim, jack, cover etc. but I drive the car alot, and would hate to have a flat out in the boonies and have no spare. My question is should the spare match the tires and rims that are on my car, or can it be a 14x7 steel rim and a tire to fit?? I don't want to sound like I am cheaping out , but this will be under a cover for all intents and purposes for along time. It isn't a show car, but I do take it to shows, and I do make every attempt to keep things as original as possible, when possible. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated Thanks

It's your car, so really it's your call.

Technically, it should have a matching wheel and tire for a spare (no trim ring or cap) but as you say it will be covered up anyway.

My GTO, which I don't drive, came with a rally I for a spare.

For my Grand Prix, which I drive the daylights out of, I bought the cheapest, blackest tire I could find, mounted it on an extra 8 lug steel rim and threw it in the trunk. I also have a small hydraulic floor jack rather than the bumper jack, and a separate set of tools (breaker bar and sockets) should I ever need it.

So, basically, put me down for "one vote for each"...

Unless the money is burning a hole in your pocket...why bother? It's under a cover, hopefully you'll never need it, even if you do need to use the spare it'll only be temporary...

Save your cash, spend it elsewhere - that's my vote!

X2 on the floor jack & tools...that's what I have. The last thing I want to do is use that bumper jack and lug wrench.

Especially on the GrandPrix because it has the 8 lug wheels (complete with LH threads on the LH side...).

I'm told you don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with one of those...

One more question, where would be the best place to get a 14x7'' rim? not sure I want to trust a salvage yard, never know how bad they may be bent or damaged where you can't see. Thanks again!!

If you have a local salvage yard where you can get a 14X7 wheel, I would go there first. You can inspect it for obvious curb rash firsthand and take it home, mount it on the front and spin it to inspect for trueness. If you're not happy with it, you can return it for an exchange. If you buy a wheel long distance, pay for shipping and THEN discover it's bent or damaged, what do you do ?

There are many on this forum that might have the rim you're looking for. Try the parts wanted forum. I bought one here from Jeff Walker. The transaction was fair and square.

I went with a cheap steel wheel cleaned up and painted. It looks nice and it helps off set the weight of the driver. It realy sucks to get a flat with out a spare.

You'll laugh at this but I use the inflatable spare out of my 79 Formula, with the canned air bottle. It's never been inflated so hopefully it's a good luck piece. LOL No original jack so I carry the collapsible jack Olds had in their late 80s rwd cars.

I can't see carrying 2 spares as I've got 14s up front and 15s in the rear. If I have a flat I'll only drive to the closest tire store and have the flat fixed asap. Mixing 14s and 15s on the front, or rear, isn't a good idea for too many miles.

I havent taken the cover off my spare in 8 years. I have no idea whats under there anymore. Nor am I concerned about what it is. If I have the need, its only a temp solution. Thats if its still has air!!!!!!

Hmmmm...Guess I need to check that.

There are plenty of trustworthy sellers who frequent the PY classifieds, you'll have no problem finding a nice straight steel wheel to use for a spare. Try one of the members who have been here for a while that already have a long sales history.

Consider yourself lucky that an inexpensive stock-size spare will suffice, for my '64 Tempest I had to buy a pretty pricey 18X9" alloy spare to match my other 4 wheels because of the size of the disc brakes I'm running. Not just any wheel will clear 13 & 14-inch brake rotors unfortunately, part of the price you pay when you stray away from stock A-body brake parts.

Paying for a nice spare wheel and tire is a lot cheaper than paying for a tow truck when you're stuck out on the road somewhere. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new matching 14X7" Rally I wheel, it's always good to have spare wheel on hand just in case you damage one (heaven forbid!). That's partly how I convinced myself to buy a spare alloy wheel.
