Auto-darkening helmet
Hey guys, I'm in the market for a QUALITY auto-darkening welding helmet. Can someone suggest a brand. I have a ton of welding to do on my 71 lemans sport convert. and I'd rather not get a cheapo from Harbor Freight. I currently have a Lincoln HD 100 flux core, but I am upgrading to gas. Thanks, David

I bought one from Harbor Freight 4 years ago...still works great...never had a problem...you can spend a lot of money on a helmet that will work just as well....I spent $50.

Miller Elite
Nice light weight helmet. Large viewing screen and good unactivated visability. They also can have "cheaters" installed on the top or the bottom of the viewing screen for bifocals.
I have this helmet and it is very nice. Can purchase in black and save a few buck. Also a coupleof designs are on sale at Praxair stores. Paul |

The 'free' one that came with my Clarke is probably about the same quality as the Harbor Freight one and it works great. I've given it quite a bit of use in 3 years or so. Treated it pretty roughly too.

I have a Hobart auto darkening helmet but if I weld for too long I see spots. I guess I need a darker one. I can't imagine someone needing one that light since all I do is exhaust and sheetmetal. Pretty light stuff
My friend has a Hobart adjustable auto darkening. He loves it so I'm gunna buy one like that

I have the Hobart adjustable auto darkening. For a hobbyist I think the Miller Elite is overkill.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll check out Harbor Freight and Northern Tool since both stores are close to my house. I hope noone got offended by my comment about Harbor Freight. I have lots of HF tools, and I certainly am not going to make a living welding--mainly just for hobby use, so HF or NT is probably fine. I'm just trying to improve my welding skills. Thanks, David

I have the Miller Pro Hobby, cost 3 times that much, works well. It was worth every penny, made me a 10 times better welder! Must be the Flame graphics?

I have a Blackstone bought from Fastenall and it's adjustable and works well. It's 5 yrs or so old and still functions like new.

I use a speedglass 9002X, I know they are not cheap. I think in the $300 range but they are the best.

Thanks again. Just wondering, some of you guys mention your helmet is adjustable. What are you referring to which is adjustable: Do you mean it can be adjusted to fit different size heads, or is the amount of DARKNESS somewhat adjustable? David
