I bought a box of parts at the last auto swap meet, and ended up with a bellhousing with the part no. 9778882. Does anyone know the application for this bellhousing? It looks like a Pontiac, Buick, Olds. Thanks

I show it as a 1965 GTO bellhousing.

Thanks, someone else told me they thought that Part No. 9785881 was correct for a 1965 GTO. Maybe there is more than one that is correct?

The part number is usually one off from the casting number.

I don't have bellhousing p/ns handy.

However, if p/n 9778882 is actually on the part, that is the same p/n that the '65/'66 P8 & T8 Bellhousing was serviced by.

The reason the p/n on a casting is sometimes "off" from the p/n listed in the MPC as Johnta1 has noticed is that people "know" is the p/n listed in the MPC. That is a p/n for the part as it was sold for service.

The p/n actually ON the cast part is for the cast part and nothing more.

Bellhousings I believe were sometimes serviced with the clutch fork seal installed (and/or some other part), consequently it was an assembly as serviced. The p/n for the assembly was necessarily different than the p/n for the bare cast part.

The same thing was true with the Timing Chain Covers (serviced as an assembly with the front seal) and the pre mid-'68 RH exhaust manifolds (serviced as an assembly with the Heat Riser Valve). So the p/ns in the MPC by which they were serviced were different from the p/n found on the casting itself.

This is one reason the MPC can be so confounding for hobbyists looking for O.E. p/n confirmation.

But whoever suggested 9785881 was a '65 Bellhousing was simply wrong. That p/n did not even get issued until after the '65 Model Year was long over.

Since I don't have a Bellhousing p/n list in front of me I can't be sure, but p/n 9785881 would have been assigned around the time '67 Model Year parts were being issued, so if it is a legit Bellhousing p/n, it is most likely a '67 Bellhousing, definitely not a '65.

The 977xxxx thru 979xxxx were p/ns issued by PMD engineering, however, sometimes other Divs shared the parts. Olds may have used the Pontiac Bellhousings, you'd have to check in with an Olds guru to be sure. But 9778882 definitely was used by Pontiac in '65 & '66.
