Need a dead on straight picture of the tach from the underside of the hood. Need reference for problem I had with shop who decided to bypass the instructions and drilled the hole to large. Need it to reference how it should look based on how mine looks.
Would really appreciate a few shots if you could. |

Are you still looking for pictures of the tach, from under the hood. I have a 67 bird that I can take some pictures of tonight.

I have a template to. The problem is the guy (shop) that did mine didnt hvae the correct hole saw so instead of asking me if he could buy one he used a 1/4" larger saw. Yah, he had the instructions from the manufacturer but now I am stuck so want to see how bad it is. |

If you have the assembly manual, I believe the info you need is in there. I'm at work, so I can't verify.

I have a factory hood that was equipped with a hood tach and the hole was not centered between the inner frame opening. The frame has a scallop where the hole through the hood skin was made.
About 25 years ago, I removed the 400 skin and replaced it with a fiberglass Trans Am skin because I wanted a 1969 Trans Am hood on the car. My idea seemed to be a good one as they produce Trans Am hoods with steel frames these days for $900. This post should be in the thread for car blunders/how I fukked up my car. Geez, I can't even begin to count how many times I regret the removal/disposal of the factory parts off of my car. |

Some reference info for the '67-'68 (early, tall style) Hood Tach location...

Thats good info. The problem with some of this stuff, is what is really really correct. I know the factory may have spec'd it one way, but did all the plants do it that way. In some cases the hood tachs were a dealer add on I've been told. I'll use this to check mind, but if it's a little different, it will stay that way.
Thanks |

If you compare the location in my pictures with RA1John's pictures, the hole is exactly the same. It would seem easier to place the hole within the frame opening but they didn't. Perhaps the persons responsible at the factory needed it to be closer to the driver so it was placed where the frame required the scallop cut. It may have even been a wiring configuration where the harness only reached to that location.
It's your car and you can do whatever you wish to do. The worse thing that can happen is some self righteous Pontiac know-it-all plick will lambast you for having it mounted incorrectly due to the original location being studied in a wind tunnel to allow the tach housing from interupting the slip stream or from being blown off the hood. They weren't able to keep the moisture out though. |

Oh well it is what it is. If it's later that I feel I really need to do, I'll have to get another hood, for it what it is.

Hey guys,
I was checking over my doc, Car Billing History and the Options & Accessories List that I receive from PHS sometime ago, these doc state that I do have a factory mounted hood tach. It's stated as 444 in these doc (GRP 062, rally gauge cluster & hood mounted tach, COL 444). I know that it does not match the template that we all have for the position of the tach. So what gives??? I'm the third owner and have own it since 1992 and I know the privious the second owner who bought it in 1980. Any comments? ak409ak |

No idea, could just be production line variance or the hood could have been replaced at some point. |
