During the winter I did a number of things to the GTO including removing the engine and completely rewiring the engine bay, cleaning up all the holes in the firewall; running new elec fuel pump with 1/2 inch lines, pulled lower dash apart to replace heater core and replaced heater fan. While I was doing this I fixed the high speed fan operation as well.
With all this said, everything worked electrically, charging properly, etc. Without the car running I can turn the ignition to the on position, hei -fuel pump- choke -elec fans all fire up (all of these run off of one ignition "on" lead that energizes relays to feed them). Without starting the car, turn ign. off and everything turns off properly. Problem is when I start the car I can not turn it off without pulling the connector on top of the alternator. What I suspect is going on is there's enough juice passing through the alternator "idiot" light lead and somehow cross connecting to the ignition lead I'm using to energize the relays. So even when I turn the ignition switch off power is still energizing the ignition lead that energizes all the relays. When the ignition is turned off and car is still running the "Gen" light is on but nothing else works, ie: turn signals for example that require ignition on. It's a 69 GTO, any thoughts would be appreciated. |

Dug a little more and I'm beginning to think it's the ignition switch. Anyone know where I can get one.

Check your voltage regulator if it's external.

It's been converted to the internal style.

Did you do the jumpers for the external regulator if you didn't do a rewire for the internal regulator?

Yeah, a few years ago I did that mod. It wouldn't keep the car running anyway.

The alt is backfeeding the ignition circuit. Normally it can't source enuf current to keep the ignition alive, but since you are powering your stuff thru relays, it is enuf to keep the relays on.
Add a diode in series with the wire that goes to alt terminal #1, (idiot lite circuit). Install the diode with the band end of the diode (cathode) pointing to wards the alt. That'll keep the alt from backfeeding to the ignition. George

Diode numbers 1N4001 thru 1N4007 will work, 1A, 100 v thru 1000v. Don't know what the RS numbers are , but those are common diodes.
