389 piston in a 62 4cyl
I found a set (8) of .030 over cast 389 pistons. I have read on here about using them in the 4cyl, but will they increase the compression to much for a daily driver ?
and I picked up another engine that is a '61. It does not have an oil filter, It just the part that bolts to the block in place of the filter adapter with the pressure sending unit. Is this common for '61s ? Thanks |

Are the pistons flat tops or dished?? Flat tops, compression will be in the 10.25 range, dished will be 8.6 range.
An oil filter was an option. They used a bypass plate instead. Dont see the bypass plate too often.

You can use them but will need a different head to bring the compression down.

Thanks Keith, your info really helps me out.
is there a piston I can buy and use the head that I have. I didn't purchase the 389 pistons yet . |

Back in 1999 I purchased low compression pistons from Kanter's for my 1961 4 cylinder motor. Turns out they were the 10.25 to 1 pistons. http://www.kanter.com///productdetai...Cat=32&Prc=362

Any decent machine shop should be able to get pistons for you. I got my last set from NAPA. .030 over 389 pistons were about $20 each. Was not building a performance engine so went with a stock replacement cast piston.

Just open up the chambers a bit on the spark plug side of head, no real cost. It will be under 10:1 stock if the head hasnt been milled alot. 10.25:1 engines adverstised are usually more like 9.75:1 actual. Will 5-8 cc removed , target an 78-80 cc chamber

i just checked with Kanter. Rings,rod,main,cam bearings.Gaskets,oil pump,chain and gears.DISHED pistons,intake and exhaust valves. Valve springs,lifters,valve guides.Push rods,rocker arm kit.
$850. plus $126 to re-grind my cam. probably going this way. |
