Trying to diagnose a problem with my daughters 1998 2.0 Beetle. She had been driving for about 15 minutes when the car died. It would start but only run for a few seconds and then die. Thought she ran it out of gas so they put gas in and that didn't help. Had it towed home and it started ok so I took it to put gas in and as I was leaving the gas station as I accelerated it stalled at about 3,000 rpm's but did not die. I drove it around and it will accelerate slowly up to 4,000 rpms but under load it will stall at about 3000 rpms.

Scanned for codes and this is what came up.

P1543 Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Signal too Low

When I check live data with the car running TP% is 0 if I give it gas it stays at 0.
Is this the reading for the throttle position?

I would say it is the throttle position sensor.
The tp% reading should increase as the throttle is advanced.

it has an electronic throttle, there are two potentiometers on the accelerator pedal, one operates 0-100% and the other 100-0 and the two numbers always have to add up to 100 as a fail safe. AP1 AP2

It was the throttle body. It needed to have a throttle body adaptation performed by a repair shop or someone with more than a basic OBDII scanner. Apparently this happens sometimes when the battery is disconnected and you don't keep power to the computer. Car is running fine now and no codes. 1998 has a cable not a wire but apparently this is much more common on the wire systems.
