I am a newbie--info on 1967 firebird formula 400
Back in 1968 another high school kid had a white with blue stripes Firebird. I asked him about the car and he said it was a formula 400. Was this a model or was he simply telling me what engine he had?

the 1967-1969 Firebird's which came with 400cid engines were actually called a 'Firebird 400';
The model name changed for 1970 to 'Firebird Formula 400' (ordering info still called it a 'Firebird 400'); Then the model name again changed in 1971 to 'Firebird Formula', with engine size being shown on the fender badges through to 1975, and fender decals which just stated 'Formula' for 1976. You could say that your 1971-1974* car was a "Formula 455", even though technically the model was a 'Firebird Formula'. * = model engine option engines were: 1970: 400 (only) 1971: 350 (base), 400, 455, 455HO (optional) 1972: 350 (base), 400, 455HO (optional) 1973: 350 (base), 400, 455, 455SD (optional) 1974: 350 (base), 400, 455, 455SD (optional) 1975: 350 (base), 400 (optional)

Maybe you are talking about the 1967 Firebird H.O.? As previously stated, the "Formula" didn't come around until 1970. Perhaps it looked like this:

it could be some sort of dealer special;
"over the top" stripes were common; Even when you do a google search with "Formula" it often includes Formula 1 stuff (unless you make a specific enough search) - so it might not be a stretch that a dealer to use a race series name for thier package... Just a thought.
