Default Morel HR lifters vs Comp Cams HR lifters

I bought a set of Morel HR lifters for my engine build because it was all could find, basically. Now Summit has CC HR lifters in stock. Are they better, quieter, etc? If the CC lifters are better, I could return the Morel (Howards Cams) lifters to Summit and get the CC lifters. Thanks.

Comp has a new lifter and dont think they are avail yet.The old lifters were made by Shaver industries in So Cal.Before that they were made by Johnson.I have a set of Morels in my 301-383 short deck build and have the Shavers in a couple of my std deck builds.Tom

Morels can be as good as any and also total garbage IMO. If you already have the Morels, I would start with those. If they are quiet you are done. If they are extremely noisy switch them out. None of the lifters we have used can be counted on.

I've used Comp, Lunati, Howards, Morel, and Crane. All of those companies are buying them someplace and they may have been selling re-boxed Morel lifters at one time or another. In any case it's difficult to get a set without at least one "ticker" in the bunch due to inconsistent plunger body to wall clearances (leak down rates all over the place). Morels are so bad I know a few very experienced engine builders that simply will NOT use them for any reason. The Crane were the only ones that were dead quiet and also didn't go to chit at high RPM's. Back when I used them they were around $800 a set and all the others were around $400-450 nearly as I can remember.

For my own engine I use the Crower HIPPO solid rollers tight lashed and zero issues since 2009. Not the first hint of giving up past 5500rpm's either. The engine revs so quick to and past 6500rpms you can barely move the shifter quick enough to keep from over-reviving the engine. I'm not recommending that deal, it's just not for everyone and I'd be a little shy about trying it with some of these "fast ramp" cam profiles folks are using these days. My cam is the older "Old Faithful" grind from Dave at SD, so for sure on those lobes the "hybrid" set-up is fine. It doesn't require any maintenance either. I haven't lashed the valves in several years and they are dead quiet and for sure it's by far and above the quietest Pontiac engine I've ever seen as far as valvetrain noise in concerned.......

What is considered the best brand to purchase right now? My project is a smallish hr with no more than 5,500rpm expected.

I like the Johnsons. I've also used the Morels that have worked perfectly fine for me. I've also bought Comps on several occasions and have been told from posting pictures on here that some of them were Johnsons, some were Morels, some were made by Shaver, so Comp has been a mixed bag of lifter brands over the years depending on when you purchased them.

However, none of them has ever given me any problems. The last set of Comps I bought from Paul, had the correct oil band height, and have been in dad's engine for more than 2 years now and are completely silent on a .400 lobe roller with 1.65 rockers.

I agree with Paul, if you already have the Morels, run with those and see if they are quiet for you. If not happy, move on to something else.

To follow up from what Cliff posted on using solid rollers on a hyd roller cam. This has been beaten to death.I used the hybrid for years, before Cliff did.Its a crutch, the cam makers will tell you if you want to run solid rollers get a tight lash street roller designed for solids. Also when you put solid rollers on a hyd roller cam you loose about 8 degrees of duration and what ever lift you set the lifters at.6 thou is the normal setting when doing it.Also it is now a solid roller cam and requires more valve spring to control the valve train.FWIW,Tom

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like I would probably be OK with the Morels but I don't want to take a chance. Butler has the Johnsons in stock now so I just ordered a set and the Morels will go back to Summit. Thanks again.

I was going to mention to get the Johnson (PR) prefix lifters instead of their standard lifters if you have a very aggressive cam. But I don’t think that Butler even offer’s the standard Johnson lifter anymore. But just in case, they do offer the standards, it is probably worth mentioning.

Sometimes people don’t differentiate the 2 Johnson lifter companies either. They have the same looking lifter bodies made by two completely different companies. Hylift Johnson and Johnson. The version that Compcams used for a while were Hylift’s Johnson standard version lifters, those weren’t a great lifter IMHO. At least not for most of of the commonly used cams grinds from Comp. There are a lot of small differences between those brands, and different versions from both companies, all are often just referred to as Johnsons. The S (slow bleed) version of HyLift Johnson with pin oiling was a nice lifter, but hasn’t been made for a few years for a Pontiac. Johnson PR is as close as you can get to those.

You made the right choice IMHO, return those Morels (Howard’s). If you were going to run Morels, run the latest Morel’s introduced last year with the higher Pontiac oil band, not the Howard’s version. Still worth the extra $$$ to step up to the Johnson PR lifters though. JMHO

Thanks for that. I think the PR lifter is what I got.

The problem is none of them are guaranteed. We are 0 for 1 with the Hy-lift Johnson lifters. We have not tried the new and improved Johnson lifters as they were always on back order each time we tried to get them. I'm a bit reluctant to purchase them as they are the company that completely screwed up their original lifters to improve proffits and cheapen their product.
