Default What product?

Need to clean up some chassis grease that made its way onto suspension parts on a highly detailed restored 65. GTO. I need something that will NOT damage the paint under the dirt/grease, so that may rule out any petroleum based product. What does that leave……citrus based? I recall Prep Sol from decades ago, but not sure this would not bleach out, fade, etc the underlying paint. Also not even sure this is still made. Have some wax and grease remover(forget what brand) but not sure what this would do to paint. Maybe try a test somewhere on my old mini van first. What do you guys suggest!?

CItrus based might dull the paint.

Default What product

I thought about concentrated Dawn after making the post. Maybe a spray bottle of water for a very minimal, controlled rinse. Don’t want to use a hose and have a million water spots when dry. Anybody else have ideas?

I would try a hot water pressure washer first with no product just hot water to see if you can blast it off.

If you use dawn, bottled water to rinse doesn't leave spots. The minerals in tap water leave the white spots.

Quarter car wash. Less pressure that a power washer.

Default Like dissolves like

Use WD40 on a rag and it will dissolve the grease and not hurt the paint. Then use a mild detergent to get the residue off.

IGL Coatings Tar & Bug remover. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend any other Bug & Tar product on the market (almost all contain harsh things like naphtha, kero, xylene, and petroleum distillates). It’s also one of the few that doesn’t market itself as a “safe” citrus based product (containing D-Limonene, a citrus based solvent paint stripper in higher concentrations).

I usually turn to a product called Formula G510 by Gaylord. It’s a colloidal based cleaner that makes grease repel itself and any other surface, as opposed to smearing the grease many times over until it appears to be gone (but never truly is). It still needs to be diluted to the desired ratio, but is generally safe because the contact time needed to clean is a fraction compared to others. Although I don’t know how easy it is to find locally or what the price is up to now. I picked up a gallon or two years ago.

Edit- I like skunkwerks WD40 idea too. Petroleum distillates, but it’s on/off so quick it’s kind of a non-issue.
