Have seen a number of questions on this B.B. and others concerning less than perfect carburetion, when often the problem was carburetor selection. The following is a listing of what Carter recommended for 'high performance street' use on various Pontiac engines:

326 - 9625
350 - 9800
389 - 9625
400 - 9800
421 - 9625
428 - 9800
455 - 9800

9625 is a 625 CFM electric choke square bore carburetor, that has since been superceded by 9635 (same carburetor with EGR port, which can be plugged).

9800 is a 800 CFM electric choke spread bore carburetor with secondary airvalve similiar to the Q-Jet.

Please note these are listed for high performance street use (Carter was assuming modifications such as cam, headers, etc.)

------------------
Good carburetion is fuelish hot air.

Carbking, What's your opinion on the new line of Demon carbs. Read their writeup in one of the car mags. Quite a few selections tailored to specific needs. Am seriously considering giving one a try.

Micheal...I have a Demon 750 on my 400. Great carb, no problems. If you can tune a holly, you can tune these. Uses many of the same parts as well..(ie..power valves). Very responsive and so far...low maintenance. Chris

Michael G. No opinion, have never seen one, personally like Carters and Rochesters; however I have a ton of respect for both the gentleman who started the Demon company and the gentleman who wrote that article.

If your considering a Demon Carburetor check out the article titled "Bigger is NOT ALWAYS better" in the new December issue of Popular Hot Rodding magazine. Very good article and discusses the strong points of using annular boosters... designed to produce a strong signal at low rpm, it's just the ticket for getting a heavy car off the line.

Steve, That's the article that caught my attention, and also had me thinking that this may be just the ticket.
I am currently toying with a 650 and 750 Edelbrock but do not feel they are the answer.
May have to see what Santa can do for me this christmas.

And not just Demon carburetors, For years I've been running my old faithfull 750 modified by Brad Urban (926 cfm) and a while back I bought a Holley HP950 w/annular boosters, done by Precision Racing Components in Houston. This puppy has great throttle response and I look forward to it's use.

RRE [Rochester Racing Engineering] has this neat carb - they call the 4MV.
It's plug & Play.
I plan to enter the 11's with it.
