HI, had a bud call and passed on this info for an 80 TA for sale for $1000, says hasn't run in about 4 years, needs typical stuff, but not too bad all around. He said it was a Pontiac engine, but didn't get any casting numbers off it but did get this info from the tag under the hood near the driver's side windsheild:
80 10D 2FS87 N 033896 19R72L 72U L A51 BL2 390599 WS4 He said it had duals and an HEI and 4bbl carb, also he said it had flare set on it and wierd wheels, chrome spoke style with fined type center caps with a reb and black Firebird on them, says he never saw these kind before, but he's not a Poncho guy per se...lol My 18 yr old son and I are looking for his first Poncho. Can anyone give me a little info from the info provided? Thanks for all the help, as always, great site and great help in the Pontiac community!! Steve

Thanks for the reply, I went to a few sites, and that was one with my son, well, he started first, then when the numbers didn't match up like the examples, I tried and got no where too...lol...thanks for the info...ya think it's a pretty good chance that the engine is a 400? or did they put 4bbl and HEIs on the 301s? I'm kinda hoping that this is a 400 so it could be built up,
Thanks, Steve

Pretty sure you could get a 301/4bbl with HEI in 1980. I owned an 81 TA with 301/4bbl HEI (non computer controlled). As you likely know, you could not get a 400 after 1979 in a TA, so if the 80 TA has a 400 it would not be original. I would go and check the engine codes/casting numbers/head codes/carb codes etc.

Thanks for the reply...I'm thinking it's a 301 too....I know Pontiac stopped making power plants in 79, but didn't they stock pile a boat-load of 400s for the 1980 model year? Was the 301 a actual Pontiac block?, if they stopped making engines in 79, was the 301 a holdover till they had enough 305 chebs to go around?...I've always been confused about this grey area. I know the 301 is kinda a boat anchor, but for the boy/18yr old I think it will still be plenty fast enough, when he's 21 he can have some real Pontiac power!..lol..looks like I'd have to go out there and do some crawling around and do the flash light and mirror thing to see if I can get some numbers off the block and such. oh, also I've always been under the impression that the 301 can't interchange parts like the other Pontiac engines, and I'm only going by what was relayed via a phone call, he swears it looks just like mine in my 71, and said that the whole engine is that ugly late color blue, including the valve covers.
thanks for your help, any other ideas? Thanks, Steve

Oh yeah, he did say it said 4.9 on the emmissions sticker on the fan cowl, make any differences?
Thanks, Steve

it was 78 they stop making the 400 and put them in the 79's. the 301 is a pontiac and most of the parts are the same except intake heads and a few more things. if the shaker or the sticker say 4.9 it's a 301 the 305 would say 5.0 and you find them more in 81's. you can do a few things to the 301 to get them to go a little better like open the exhaust up change the cam ect.

Sounds likely its a 301. Don't let that stop you if you like the car, that's easy to "fix" with a donor engine.
You'll already have the carb and distributor. The 301 we'll be good to learn on and easier on gas while you get the rest of the parts together. |
