I'm wondering if I can use a later model flywheel on my 1960 engine. I could compensate for the different ring gear tooth count by changing the starter drive or changing ring gear and the difference in register hole diameter could easily be overcome with a small adapter ring machined locally. My concerns are offset at the ring gear [for starter engagement] and bolt pattern. Anybody ever try this?

how can you visually tell the difference in a 60 flywheel verses a later one, 64-up.i took a 60 motor apart about 10 years ago and i don't have the bellhousing but i might have the flywheel in my very unorganized shed.i'm not sure but i will look tomorrow when i go to where my cars are. i also know where there is a 56 3 speed car but i think the fellow wants to get rid of the whole car, its very rusty and would be a handful to move. if the flywheel would work i'll give him a call if i can't fix you up

bud, remember about 15 yrs ago i put the 63 ambulance motor in my red 62 car? the 62 flywheel wouldn't fit over the 63 crankshaft. i took both to the machine shop and ask them to fix me up. they bored the center out of the 62 flywheel to match the 63. if i remember right, they told me they took out about .030(i think). if you measure the center hole in a 63 up flywheel, it should be about .030 larger than the 62 back. at least that's how i remember it. don't know if this helps. don

Yeah, Bud. The 60 flywheel will have a smaller center hole than the 63 and up flywheel. Let me know if you find that 60 flywheel...I'd be interested in purchasing it if it's for sale...thanks
