I'm considering replacing my standard log exhaust with ram air. What is the liklyhood of
breaking a bolt? Should I heat up the motor or keep it cold? Any other pointers would be helpful. Thank you, Matt 1969 GTO std 4sp |

Matt there is a lot of stuff in the archives on this subject. I did mine and had no problems. Use a 14mm 6 sided socket on the bolt heads unless they are in brand new shape. I sprayed the bolts with PB Blaster on and off for a few days before I started. I also cranked the car during this time hoping to help work the penetrant in. Just enough to heat the manifolds a little. If you break one, pray it breaks flush with the manifold. Take the rest loose and you'll still have a little to work with. If it breaks flush with the head, post a thread on head removal.

Matt,
Go for a drive, warm the engine to operating temp. When you get home, spray the manifold bolts with penetrating oil, it will smoke, but don't worry too much. Let the engine cool for 1-2 hours, then spray the bolts again. The next morning, put your wrench on the bolts and go to town. I did this with 34 year installed bolts, and had no problem. Good luck!
