I'm still learning how to decipher the body tags. Can anybody tell me the relevant information for my 1970? Here's the body tag:

Not too much information can be gained by the Trim Tag.
ST (style code) 70 (year) 22387 (model; Firebird) NOR (manufacturing plant; Norwood, OH) 736448 (sequencial body number in assembly line) BDY (body number) TR (trim code) 201 (standard bucket seats, Blue) 10 10 (Polar White, upper and lower) PNT (paint code) 06A (build date; June, 1st week) WS4 (Trans Am) My guess is your VIN is around 228870N123***.

Nice site. One thing incorrect on the sites' NOR trim tag. There is no dash between the 70 and the 22387 (they did that on the BL trim tag and all NOR tags had 22387, BL tags had the actual body style) and a second set of numbers or a letter by the PNT. The size of the tag and the printing on the bottom of the tag are also different for the BL trim tag (not pictured). Also not listed was the WS4 and W66 code designations.

If my car was built in the first week of June, what dates should my wheels be?

Frank you have a late car for a 70. I'm trying to find you a ws block and have a line on some. Then we can talk about the ra 4 heads that you have. I will find out more in a few weeks.

weranc55,
Whne sis they switch over to producing the '71? I didn't realize that June would be considered 'late'. Does this mean that KR wheels might be correct? Let me know about the WS.

Frank I have 4 70 t/a's ra3 and they are all April or May. I'm not a expert on the wheels but it is weird that your car has all KR's.

weranc55,
I don't think my KRs are correct, but that's all I have. I am looking to replace them with JWs, if I can find them. I'm just not sure about the date code on the wheel. How long before the first week of June (build date of car) should the wheels be?

Frank,
Dont know, I'm not a real expert on wheel codes. I actually have never looked on my JWs to check the date. I'm more interested that they look correct. |

Racerboy,
KR's & KN's were definately not used on '70 1/2 T/A's. 70 1/2's all took JW's. The JW's were stamped from mid January till late June of '70. When 15x7 small center wheel production resumed it was in late July of '70 with the few dates of KN's that were built. Looking at an inventory list of JW's, there were prob no more than 15 different dates of original JW production. Latest I've ever had were 6/27/70's. Finding a date matched set will be a BEAR. For a 06A body built '70 1/2 Norwood plant T/A, a set of 5/25's would prob be the best "fit", though even an early May set would work fine. Something you will prob find out, is the few folks that do have matched sets of extra JW's... usually they are not intersted in trading them for KR's or selling them off. Just my .02, but if street driving the car is your goal, it's a mean old world out there & stuff happens... one would prob be better off with a set of recently manufactured 15x7's with the small centers. At one time, myself & a good friend were having these built, as was a fellow in CA, & now a fellow in WA state.

Saw your bid earlier in the day...
The 2/29/72 dating while in nos condition, was also used in production. Have had KR's stamped up into early April of '72. Have four 2/28/72 dated KR's for my '72 4spd car (built 03E) & a 2/29/72 for the trunk spare. Took a long time to put that set together.

'ol Pinion Head,
THanks for your info. Are you suggesting taking the KRs off the car an putting the repos on? I am not that concerned about the JW "situation" because the KRs at least appear correct.
